Hi, I'm brand new here and have been reading through a bunch of past threads but can't find the answer to my question. I just got JamStix and Sonar 5 Studio. I'm a bit of a noob to the whole DAW thing. Anyway, In N-Track, I'm able to add Jamstix as an "instrument channel", select some rhythms and hit the play button in N-track to hear the arrangement. Exactly the same as in the video tutorial.

However, I can't seem to get Jamstix to play in Sonar without having to record MIDI. In other words, I open a new Sonar project and add Jamstix as a soft synth VST. I have Sonar create the MIDI track as well. Then after I'm done in the arranger, I have to hit the record button and record the midi in order to hear my rhythm. Is there anyway to simply play an arrangement in Sonar with out recording anything?

Thanks.

Dave

Sonar doesn't play if it thinks there is nothing to play. The key is to make Sonar realize that there is in fact something to play. One way is to add a dummy MIDI event on some MIDI track at bar 1000 or so.

Thanks for the response. I assume then that even in that case, I'd have to record instead of just play?

No, if you add a dummy note to bar 1000 on any MIDI track, Sonar will play to that point.
