^^^^ somehow your reply got pasted onto my last reply.

"Reset in the arranger resets 'choices' for a bar, meaning any fill, accent, probable note decisions etc. will be cleared. "

so, when i Reset in the Arranger, the rhythm for that particular bar does not change (the "Beat" stays the same) but only the fills and accents change?

thanks.

That's correct.

Ralph, i'm using version 1.2.

i'll upgrade some time soon (gotta get help from work to download the update, burn it onto the disc to take home). hopefully the rhythms will no longer be rewritten with every pass of my guitar loop.

i've got questions on best techniques for finding the right beat with FreeJamming but i'll wait till i update and maybe figure stuff out on my own.

thanks for all your tireless support.

Jason

Jason thanx for posting this thread. i am having the same struggles with learning how to use jamstix. I, like you, need slow step by step, easy to follow tutorials. I am trying real hard to learn how to create the beat i hear in my head so from reading your thread i believe ill have to use manual mode to do this as free jam mode is not playing anything close to the beat i want to my song. I will look at all the tutorials again & see if they help. If anyone would post a thread tutorial on how to do this i would be grateful. thanx

Put JS in manual mode, let your host play and enter the JS rhythm tab.

I recommend you start by loading the 'Rock Basic I' rhythm via the 'Load' button. Watch the beat numbers light up as the rhythm plays and you'll get a sense of what the checkboxes do. Now try changing the rhythm by checking/unchecking boxes in the snare and kick panels to get more familiar with the concept and then try to realize one of your drum ideas in your head this way.

dvarg,

man, i was ready to give up on this. then, with the support of Ralph and other Jammers, i made a breakthrough.

here's what worked for me:

forget Freejam for now. use Manual (like Ralph said). you could load a Jamstix beat but why not create your own?

go to the kick combo box. (make sure you're in Manaul mode first, then go to Rhythm where you see the kick, snare, hihat and tom boxes).

check beat 1 and 3 in the Kick combo box.

then go to the Snare combo box.

check snare hits on the 2 and 4.

(forget about hihats or toms for now; this is just to get familiar with Manual rhythm creation and the Arranger).

voila, you've got a basic 4/4 rock beat: kick, snare, kick snare.

(you MUST have your host running; press play on the Cubase transport, for example).

now, go to Arranger mode.

there are 16 Rhythm slots; each is empty to start but each can become a beat you've loaded or created.

as you've just created this beat (kick, snare, kick, snare) that should be in the first. it will be on the first row of the grid.

now click on the second row; it's empty for now but when you click on it it will take you to the Rhythm screen where you can build a second beat.

just to make different beat, do anything vastly different from the first. for example: try four kicks on the quarter hits and a snare on the last (4th) quarter hit with maybe an extra snare hit on the 8th.

so this beat is:

kick, kick, kick, kick/snare and snare on the 8th.

now go back to Arranger. you now have TWO distinct rhythms.

by clicking on the empty Arranger cells you can tell the Arranger what beat you want it to play on what bar.

for example:
on bar 1, click in the first horizontal row (your first beat: kick, snare, kick, snare).

repeat by clicking on the first row for bars 2, 3 and 4. the same beat will play the first 4 bars.

for bars 5 and 6, change it up; clikc on the SECOND horizontal row, your second beat (4 kicks and a double snare hit).

for beats 7 and 8 click back on the first horizontal row, your first rhythm.

voila: you have an 8-bar Arrangement with 2 beats you've created. the first beat (aka Rhythm) plays for 4 bars, then your second beat plays for 2 bars and back to the first beat to end the Arrangement.

obviously this is a dumb-ass Arrangement with far-too-simple beats. but it will get you to understand just how Manual mode works (you create your own Rhythms, in Rhythm) and how the Arranger basically works.

to create an Intro, right click bar 1. choose Intro. you then have a list of options. by clicking the "Note" icon you can preview every Intro. pick one you like, then Close. the Aranger should now have an "I" on bar one in the first Rhythm row.

it will now play an Intro of your choosing in bar one followed by your Arrangement described above.

the same goes for Endings and Fills.

note: Use Arrangement is a bit tricky for people to understand but actually very simple.

when checked, Jamstix will play the Arrangement you've created; so it will change beats when you specified and do Intros, etc, where you placed them.

when UNCHECKED it will play the Rhythm or beat you've selected in the Arranger over and over. it will NOT change beats as per your Arrangement.

Unchecked is good for when your in the Rhythm screen and you're tweaking a beat; you'll wanna hear the same beat for 100 bars and you will not want to change beats as per your Arangement.

you can edit beats as they play which is very cool.

just make sure you first select Manaul mode.

experiment with creating easy beats and Arrangements and slowly get more complex. this is how i got to understand Manual Mode and the Arranger.

now Freejam, ah, i'm not touching that for a bit...

Smile

hope this helps.
