hi. well, i bought Jamstix maybe a year ago, played with it for a bit, then dedicated my time to Cubase learning. then i had my DAW packed up for about 6 months because of a move.

so i'm a long-time Jamstix owner but really a newbie. i'm back to learning the software from scratch and i'm having difficulties. anyway...

here's my set-up: Cubase SX 1.0, Jamstix (older release). i'm trying to get Jamstix to play to guitar tracks i've recorded as audio tracks on Cubase.

according to the manual p.10, to Jam with Audio-In, i create a new audio track, add Jamstix as an Insert, choose VST Instruments and add Jamstix. I then choose FreeJam and "Jam With Audio" in the bottom right corner.

this does not work for me.

the only way i get Jamstix to work is to create a Cubase midi track with Jamstix as the output AND then i had to raise the Minimum Velocity. without raising the velocity, no Jamstix beat.

also, i don't think it seemed to matter if i would then select "Jam With Audio" or "Jam With Midi."

so, to have Jamstix create beats based on Cubase audio guitar tracks, what should i be doing? is it right to create a midi track? why is it not working without the midi track and just using "Jam With Audio"?

thanks kindly.

I'm assuming you made a typo and meant 'add audioM8' as Insert.

So let's recap:

- Insert audioM8 as insert effect on audio track
- Add Jamstix to the VST instrument rack
- Set 'Free Jam' and 'Jam With Audio'

Play Cubase and watch the audioM8 needle. If it doesn't move with the audio signal, make sure you have 'Direct Monitoring' in Cubase disabled (
Devices-device setup-vst multitrack- uncheck direct monitoring).

Once the needle is moving, watch the velocity response in Jamstix and adjust input trim as needed. You may also wish to use 'Min Velocity' to set the lowest play level of Jamstix.

thanks, Ralph!

you were right, it was a typo and i meant audioM8.

thanks for the Cubase direct-monitoring tip.

and, to be clear, i get the M8 audio needle moving, but only when i create a midi track.

when should i be using "Jam With Midi", when i'm using a midi keyboard track to "drive" the drums? as opposed to a guitar-based song?

thanks.

That's correct. You should also use it when you do not want to use any input to 'drive' Jamstix as the audio mode would cause velocity to fall and stay at minimum without signal.

Ralph, disabling Direct Monitoring did the job -- i got the meter moving with just audio.

that said, my system (or my brain) seems at times to be inconsistent.

it seemed, once, that i couldn't get Jamstix going with just the audioM8 meter moving and an audio track (recorded guitars) with no midi track.

but another time it did work without a midi track.

question 1: when i'm jamming to a recorded guitar track, i don't NEED a midi track with Jamstix as an "out", do i?

question 2: does Jamstix work with just a live (non-recorded) guitar signal?

as odd as it seems i wasn't sure yesterday. i think it kinda played to my live signal but was very low and not a complete beat. but it was late and i was tired.

thanks as always for your great support.

You don't need one but you are using SX1, which is quite old so I can't make any guarantees on what it does under the surface.

Yes.

Sounds like low velocity. Always watch the velocity slider in Jamstix. If it is too low for what you are playing, raise the input trim.
