Hi - I'm trying to have JS jam with playback of a MIDI track. There are many MIDI tracks in my project, but the only tracks with the Monitor icon pressed and yellow are this specific MIDI track and the JS track (with it's output routed to JS, as noted in the instructions on page 10 of the 1.6 manual (Cubase SX3). Edit: I am in Free Jam.

When I hit play, JS plays, and I can hear both it and my MIDI track. Trouble is, there's no activity on the JS MIDI In (yellow) indicator, and the velocity slider isn't moving.

This raises two questions in my mind:

1) What is JS "listening to" to generates its jam, if it's not getting MIDI input (per its yellow MIDI In indicator on the bottom right)?
2) More importantly, can anyone please help me figure out what am I doing wrong in terms of telling JS to jam to this specific MIDI track (out of many).

Of note, while the project is playing, if I play my keyboard, there is indication on JS of MIDI in, so connections and all are OK.

Thanks -

You misconception centers around the MIDI flow within Cubase. Let's clear it up:

When you press the 'Monitor' on a MIDI track you are telling Cubase to send data coming from your MIDI keyboard to that track. You cannot send MIDI data from one existing track to another via this icon, only 'live' MIDI data from the MIDI input of your computer (usually connected to a MIDI keyboard).

Jamstix (and any other VSTi) listen for data on their single MIDI input. The host decides where that data comes from and in Cubase that's any MIDI track that has its output set to Jamstix.

In your situation, where you'd like a specific MIDI track to feed into Jamstix, you're best off to copy the MIDI data from that track to the Jamstix track.

Hi Ralph - Of course you are right. I didn't know if JS was somehow being directed to my MIDI instrument through that monitor icon. Sounds silly now...

Thanks again -
