Hi - I'm not a drummer, so my description will be pretty bad (sorry) ... but I'm looking for a sound of a hi hat being struck fairly sharply, then being closed briskly, with a sound like "ShooooOOOP!". Example is a lot of Lynrd Skynrd songs.

I think I've read that the hi-hat is something that only has 2 or 3 states in the current version of JS, with plans to make that better in the future.

What are most people doing who want more than the JS hi-hat offerings currently available?

Thanks Very Happy

Make sure you have Jamstix 1.61 or later, go to the rhythm tab, select 'Rock Basic I' in the library, click on the first hihat panel quarter event (says 'Closed') and select 'Semi'. Set the second column to all 'Silent'. Now adjust the velocity on the 'Eighths' box to max for best effect.

Is this close to the sound you had in mind?

Please note that this sounds best with the DrumPak #2 hihat and/or higher ambience levels.

You also might want to increase the volume of the HiHat Closed and HiHat Half-Open sounds on the Mapping tab to hear the effect better.

Hi Zauni and AlanB - Yes, that did get me pretty close, especially after making those changes and others in the Mapping Tab, and especially when compressing the heck out of it and adjusting the attack and release, and ambience.

All this got me thinking though - if I were to sample the hi hat sound that I'm thinking of, would there be a way to have that sound triggered, as a replacement for JS's internal hi hat sound? I'm guessing it's a matter of putting the sample in a bank, and mapping that sound to one of the choices in the drop-down menu, but I guess I don't even know if that's possible for us end users to do.

If so, would somebody be able to give a reasonable approximation of a step-by-step please?

Thanks Very Happy

Jamstix' internal engine does not support user samples at this time but you can use a subhosted sampler module for custom samples.

Hi Ralph - That terminology is over my head, by a lot I think...

Could you please rephrase that, maybe give an example of some product that does that, maybe I could google it and see what you're referring to.

Thanks Very Happy

There are drum sample player VSTi on the market, like Battery, that you can load into Jamstix and into which you can load your own wave files.

The KvR instrument database has lots of data on these plugins, which range from free to quite expensive.
