Is there a HOW to guide for sonar 5? On the manual and quick start, there is info for sonar 4 which does not apply to 5.
I'm trying to play keyboard and midi in to my sonar and have jamstix free jam, and no luck... Tx |

Sonar 4 and 5 are nearly identical in this respect. Are you using a piano VSTi or similar for sound in Sonar as you play your keyboard? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Well, I guess my question was how would JS pick up and jam with my music.
The way I'm doing it now is my keyboard has direct monitor out so I can tell what I play on it. Then I have midi out from keyboard to midi in on SONAR 5. Under sonar 5, for the piano midi track, I have the out on the midi track to JAM STX audio track. Is this the way to do it? |

No, that is incorrect.
Look at section 2.4.2 of the 'Free Jam Quick Start' PDF where it states for jamming with MIDI hardware instrument in Sonar:
- Select your keyboard as the MIDI input of the Jamstix MIDI track and enable Input Echo.
- Look at Jamstix while you play your keyboard you should see the little yellow LED in the right-bottom corner light up and the velocity slider move.

Thanks Ralph.
The problem is that the only way I can load JS under sonar 5 is under an audio track. I can not get JS to load up under midi track, have no idea how to do this.
If anyone knows, please let me know, as this seems to be my problem in this case.
Thanks again |

Sonar Menu Bar -> Insert Menu -> Soft Synth -> VST -> Jamstix
Make sure the following boxes are checked in the options dialog that will pop up:
- MIDI Source
- All Synth Audio Outputs
- Synth Property Page _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Cool, got it to work. I like what the freejam comes up with, only if I could tell it stylise with with pop, vs speed metal, vs funk etc etc. I think this is being worked on???
The more I play, the more I realise the power of this software. |

| Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do you import other midi grooves to jamstix? THere are a couple of nice groove monkee grooves that I want use, but I like to have JS vary it somewhat. Please let me know if that is possible.tx |

Click the IMPORT button in the rhythm tab and select a MID file with a groove to import. Grooves must be in GM format and this is not a 100% conversion as Jamstix is rule-based. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks, I'll try that. Not sure what "rule based" means though |

New problem.
I'm trying to follow section 2.4.2 under quickstart. I have a keybard that I want jamstix to jam with. I insert the jamstix vst as instructed and get 5 tracks inserted. Under Jamstx 1 track, I go under input and choose midi chanal 1 as my midi input from my keyboard. I enable echo on. I play and see that the yellow light in the bottom right on the jamstix vst goes on/off, but the velocity slider does not move. I lock it, and unlock it, no change. Is there any other setting that I need to be playing with?

The sequencer must be running for the slider to move. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Got it to work, thanks again.
Interesting. I seems that for a given funkiness and complexity, no matter what variation of rhytms I play, freejam comes up with the same patterns. For exampl, if funk/complx is near the zero value, no matter what I play, jamstix plays kick at 1/3 quarters and snare at 2/4 quarters.
So in essense, it seems that free jam is dependent much more on funkiness/complexity pattern rather than the groove/patter that I actualy play. Is this true/?? |

Yes, the basic groove that Jamstix plays is not at all dependent on what you play. It is solely dependent on the jam tab settings. However, here's where your MIDI play input comes in:
- velocity
- association of rhythms with chord structures
- jam habits (instant hits, single note ride etc.)
Also, when funk/comp sliders are at or close to their minimums, Jamstix is restricted to the basic rock groove (KSKS). At higher settings, you will notice that Jamstix can be much more inventive (hit 'Reset' in the jam tab to cause JS to come up with something else at the same settings)
There is also an undocumented ini switch that will allow you to tie the funk/comp sliders to your actual MIDI play. This may be what you are after. This function is currently undocumented because the arrangement cannot be repeated so you have to record the performance.
Here's a link to the settings if you want to try that out:
