Anybody have esperience with Virtual Guitarist II or Real Guitar - or better yet, experience with both? I'm holding out for jambassist - so not even looking at bass VSTs, but I could use some guitars in the mean time. Which should I be most strongly considering to complement my Jamstix (and why).
Thanks!

Hi Geoff,
don't really know about VG II or Real Guitar, but I 've heard a lot of VG 1 / EE in a friend's music and played around with it as well.
I'm not at all convinced of that concept. The only style VG does remotely usable (for my ears, ok, I'm a guitar player) are simple strummed acoustic guitars to fill up a track.
Solos and fills - not possible.
Acoustic picking and electric rhythm guitars sound annoyingly mechanic.
Think '80s drum machine vs JS or a real drummer.
Don't you think you could do sketches of your guitar parts with free soundfonts and then use a friend's talent for the final guitar parts ?
This can even be fun !
Imho the hardest things to emulate convincingly are saxophone, blues harp and guitars, even a mediocre player will sound so much better than any software I've heard yet.
Cheers, Rhino |

Guys, you gotta get RealGuitar 2. It's Mint!!
The samples are fantastic, and easy to use for bass/chord, chord, and harmony techniques.
I haven't heard anything better than this for acoustic guitar.
If you're after clean and distortion guitars, I highly recommend getting Prominy LPC Clean/Distortion for Kontakt 2. If you listen to the demo's and can get to grips with key-switching samples, you'll be amazed.
Trust me on both accounts.

I think both are useful and use them both regularly. Real Guitar is exceptional samples in my opinion. Both take some MIDI and editing chops to make them more realistic. But if you don't have access to a guitar player night and day... not to mention one that will play exactly what you want...
A really good guitar player can beat either - but that also implies that you're recording/engineering chops are good also. |

The Prominy stuff sounds unbelievable, but you bet the programming was done by a genius, equally perfect on guitar and keys.
Every nuance sounds like a real guitar would.
How good would it work for an average musician ?
I'd love to hear some user demos !
The samples clearly are the best I've ever heard.

Thanks all!
Is there someone who is familiar with both, who is able to recommend which one you'd choose if you could only buy one?

I own both real guitar 2 and the prominy stuff, and have used v.guitarist in the past (both electric and acoustic versions, but not VG 2).
I stand by my comments above, strictly speaking as a pro guitarist of 10 years and a professional sound engineer.

Just a for interest, there is a group buy for ManyGuitar at the moment, going on at KVR or www.ManyTone.com.
It actually reached the required number, but if it reached 200, there is a free 100 meg Sitar added.
Edit: I am /was part of the group buy but have no affiliation with ManyTone - and while I have ManyGuitar (as a new purchaser) I can't compare it with other packages - but I think it's great. |

But I must agree with earlier post from ProfRhino. In VG1 the actual rythms that come with the software that are useable in a song are very limited and are very repetitous like if you picture the way any other drum machine sound, besides (JAMSTYX MY HERO), I paid for VG1 and experimented with it quite a lot and have had it for well over a year and have only used it on one song. As the earlier person said I played guitar professionally for 20 years before I switched to keyboards the last 16 years so it is easy for me to play most of the parts I want, but even with that aside I do not believe I would be happy using VG1. VG2 may be much better. I must admit the demo to real guitar was very very amazing, I just do not know how hard it will be to learn to use the program to get the results they were getting. Might be easier to buy guitar and learn to play it. Ha. Ha. Best of luck with your choice.

| RG2 is excellent. I'd like to learn more about VG2, but I agree with the comments above re RG1 which I got to play with in a local music shop - it was fun, but of little real use. RG2 is hugely versatile and the more you put into it, the better it gets. |

I'm sure you meant VG1 there.
I own RG2 and it's awesome. I can't play guitar anymore due to artritis, but even if I wouldn't have had artritis I would have bought RG2 and dumped my guitar: I'd never be able to record a live sessions sounding as good as a track made with RG2. (Well, almost... ). I really love the possibility to edit the midi guitar part up to the smallest detail instead of re-recording a (part of a) real guitar. The samples are awesome: the best I've ever heard. Heck, you even get various guitars! It sure beats my old guitar (with cheap pickups and cheap mics and lots of noise and so on... ) |

| I was wondering just like you, so I bought VG (SE) - a light version, and then RG2. While I know it's not exactly apples to apples comparison, but RG2 has SO many features that the full version of VG doesn't. Look at RG2's demo avi's. However, RG2 only has acoustic sounds. As long as that's not an issue my recommendation would be RG2. |

I did mean VG1. Sorry. RG1 was excellent, RG2 even better. |
