|
|
I have a user interface suggestion for Jamstix Ver 2. It would be great if it had a virtual drumset window similar to the interface in EZDrummer, and the call up window in Band-In-A-Box.
It would be a great way to have visual feedback on what’s happening with the beats and it’s also a good learning tool.
Also, it would just look really cool…

We've been thinking about something like that... _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| If this were a poll, I'd vote no. Flashy graphics like BFD do nothing for me but eat CPU. The current GUI and my ears tell me what I need to know. Not trying to be snotty; just my opinion. |

| I agree with Chris. Performance first, then GUI. |

Yup,
I have to vote no as well. Keep it simple. Functionality, performance, flexibiltiy, then (maybe) GUI eye candy.

Ralph, my priority request would be for some form of matrix page which shows the mapping status i.e. all the hits (snare, kick, open HH etc.) down one axis and the assigned sound on the other axis. This matrix could include a column for the output channel and probably a lot more settings which are related to each dimension.
Maybe it's just me but I find I spend a lot of time getting mappings right and this would provide both speed and and all-in-one overview of this area of Jamstix.
The other thing I find fiddly is drawing a mapping curve. Perhaps we could have a line which you can "grab" and bend - I'm thinking of the eq curved in Cubase or something like that. Maybe some presets as well?
Thanks, |

Well, you could close the window on the virtual drums if you didn't want it... |

Definitely wouldn't mind seeing some GUI changes, but not completely necessary. Anything that would add to the ease of operation. _________________ T-bonesplace.com |

Guys
I agree with what you are saying here!
Jamstix sounds great and that's good right? Yeah its fantastic!
BUT you know what? Fancy graphics isn't all 'eye candy'.
To me visual representation means easier operation.
OK, I have BFD and visually it not only looks great... but because everything is so beautifully represented... it is a breeze to navigate..
Now BFD SUCKS at generating beats and arranging songs... so I bought JAMSTIX.... (and love it)
However... if BFD could initiate and arrange songs as well as Jamstix...
Good simple and easy to identify interfaces lets your right brain hemisphere (Creative side) stay in control.... when you have to read tiny dialouge on a computer... you left brain (non-creative-stress forming) comes into play...
I think ONE area where some graphics would be good would be in the kit pieces list... the pics wouldn't have to be huge... just some indication of what kit piece is what. Instead of having to 'squint' to read each piece by name (Yeah I've completely forgotten about my song by this stage!)
And Ralph and the boys... you have a unique piece of software (actually a musical intrument) here... but don't be afraid to copy good ideas off other companys (BFD?) a bit...
I mean all the main DAW's look pretty much the same... Sonar, CUBASE, LOGIC... they've all copied one another to some degree...
Just my opinion

I really agree with wellesleymusic, and paspallum’s ideas. Jamstix is stunningly fast for creating rhythms and arrangements, but I end up spending ages tweaking the mappings to get them just right. That’s mostly just me, as I usually end up endlessly fine tuning a mix anyway.
What slows me down though is not being able to see a visual representation of all the drum mappings at once. It would be great if there was a window like what was described in the last few posts.

Ok, so after reading this and hearing about the EZdrummer, I went and checked out their website. I have to say that it looks like what I've been looking for. I'm not a drummer and I truly need something really simple. I'm now wondering if maybe this might be what I need or if I should just keep trying to work with JS?
I've read a few posts on Cakewalks forum, from people saying that they have both of these products, and that they are getting better results with the EZdrummer.
What I personally need is the ease of working with .wav loops and the control that midi offers. I think that I understand most of JS operations, but for the life of me, I can't seem to get anything accomplished! This is most likely an issue with my own incompitance and not JS.
Here's my take on what I've seen so far;
The interface of the EZdrummer is simple and quite frankly, it's beautiful! Perhaps, it's not necessary for some, but for me, it helps in not cluttering my brain.
The groove collection or midi files player(whatever its called) looks to be much easier to use as well, simpler to preview. It would be nice, though, if it had an arranger view, like that of JS, as opposed to just dragging and dropping into the host.
The mapping pages aren't really an issue for me, I have that pretty well figured out, as well as the mixer. The EZdrummer's mapping looks to be a little faster or "easier", due to the graphics, but again, this isn't an issue for me.
As far as sound qaulity is concerned, it's up in the air. I have all of the add-ons, except the E-pak, for JS. They sound very nice to me. The EZdrummers sounds are equally as pleasing, again, to me.
I'm just a hobbyist, a basic guitar and bass player, trying to write some simple tunes, but I've spent an awful lot of time and mental energy trying to find a simple drumming solution. I think that I'm going to give the EZdrummer a try and see if it's what I've been looking for. Will these two products work in conjunction with one another? Would there be a need?
For example, if it is easier to build a drum track with EZD, could I then have JS play the midi file created in EZD, and have JS add the humanizing effect? If I decide that I prefer the sound of the EZD samples, could I then return the JS performance back to the EZD player for it's samples?
Any thoughts? _________________ T-bonesplace.com |
