I've just bought TheExtractor from http://www.tazman-audio.co.uk/ and when used as an insert on my monitored guitar audio track it can generate MIDI data which I can send into Jamstix in real time. Whilst the midi data it generates is only monophonic, it is only being used to trigger Jamstix when a chord change occurs (sent as only single notes) or as to the rhythms of my guitar playing, so it still works very well in terms of what Jamstix listens out for when wondering how to drum (at least as far as I understand how Jamstix works)
An idea has just occured to me that putting a chordiser MIDI FX inbetween the midi reaching Jamstix to automatically change all single notes into chords might make Jamstix respond even better (Ralph does Jamstix perform any worse with strictly monophonic MIDI lines?)
Audio 2 Midi is definitely the future of live instrument jamming on a computer - it makes Jamstix much more dynamic than the audioM8 can hope to provide through simple velocity changes. Hopefully now with 1.02 I can activate and unactivate different loops using my keyboard pedal during verse or chorus guitar bits then let it rip into full complexity live drumming during heightened bits (I haven't tried the new version yet, just downloading it now but this is what I gather live loops is all about)
I'm very impressed with all of the functionality this first generation product is providing - and it can only get better (or worse if you're a real drummer out of work I guess!!)

A lot of the Jamstix MIDI logic is based on polyphony. For example the pattern-to-chord assignment is based on the notes received during the first 16th of each bar. When there is only one note there won't be enough distinction and you may notice a reduced number of patterns in use. Also, jam habit detection is geared toward polyphony.
It will still be fun, though

Yes, that's what LiveLoops is all about. By the way, we are fixing several issues with the LiveLoops in the inofficial 1.02 and hope to have an official update by tomorrow. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I had the same idea originally and have tried several audio-to-midi plug-ins incl. The Extractor, but I found the results I was able to get compared to Audio-Jam rather disappointing.
So i´d rather go in the direction of a hexaphonic midi- conversion à la ROLAND then...
or simply bashing my old keyboard instead! |
