Installed the demo last night and ran into a large latency issue. Jamstix works but the sound is jammed full of pops and micro-dropouts. (This is different than the demo's random drop out for a couple of beats every couple of measures.) Moving up the latency settings in Sonar helps but only minimally.
Here's what I'm running:
Sonar 3.1.1
P4 2.4Ghz
512mb PC2100 DDR Ram
SB Live soundcard
The cpu meter in Sonar doesn't go about 12-15% when jamstix isrunning, so it doesn't seem to be a processor issue. So, some questions:
1. Is the bottleneck in this setup with the Soundcard? The SB Live is a bit on the aging side and I do notice that the Load meter in Jamstix is reaching above 40 polyphony. Does my old card not have enough ram/processing strength to run Jamstix smoothly? I've been looking at the m-audio cards for a while as a replacement (spec. the Audiophile 2496), will this upgrade help with latency and have people here had good experiences with the m-audio cards?
2. I tried installing the ASIO drivers but Sonar doesn't see them in the Audio options even after running 'Wave Profiler'. Can I not use the ASIO drivers with the SB Live?

Sounds like a driver issue but send me your rzdlog.txt file from the Jamstix directory to support @ rayzoon.com so I can make sure.

I think it's the driver. Please try the free ASIO4ALL driver (www.asio4all.com), which often does wonders.

I have no personal experience with the 2496 but have heard good things about it.

Remember to switch the driver mode in the advanced tab of the audio settings in Sonar to ASIO.

I've recently changed from a SB Audigy to M-Audio Audiophile 24/96. It's great value for money (£50 - £60) and works really well, with practically no latency. The other card in the same price range is the EMU 0404, but some people are nervous of recommending this card.
The only downside has been using different leads (phono rather than minijack) and the lack of any eq on the card. I'm using computer speakers with a woofer, so it was nice to be able to turn the bass down. Santa is solving the problem for me by giving me some active monitors than tone controls.
Get the 24/96. You won't regret it!

Got it. And after a bit of tweaking the ASIO options it has worked wonders. Wish I had switched to ASIO a long time ago. Thank you so much for your quick and useful help.

I've been seriously considering the EMU0404. I have been looking for a card that has optical SPDIF and there really isn't a lot that provide this at a reasonable price point. I was able to find a rather vanilla sound card that provided that capability but it was somewhere around the $80 mark and I would still have to use my Tascam122. Looking at the emu I could get rid of the Tascam (or continue to use it if I wanted the additional channels). It seems that the Emu has gotten better as they have continued to release new drivers. I also looked at the 24/96 but it only had RCA SPDIF. I found a converter but that costs around $80, making it a rather more expensive solution.
