I have Jamstix sending MIDI out to a MIDI track in Cubase 14. Then that MIDI track goes to the input of Studio Drummer (in Kontakt). Jamstix plays both kits and I can mute one or the other of the AUDIO Channels.
When I click on a kit piece in the kit view of Jamstix, it doesn't send the MIDI out. As far as I can tell, it is not making out to the Cubase MIDI track (no activity showing). It also doesn't send any MIDI out when I hover over the events in the groove editor (i.e. the auto audition). I have been away from the DAW for a bit and can't seem to figure this out.
GOAL: I want to click on the kit pieces and articulations in Jamstix and see what triggers in Studio Drummer. I am using the Studio Drummer default MIDI mapping but just want to see if there are some pieces or articulations that I might need to adjust or add.

Thanks for the reply. That didn't work but I found something that does.
On the Kit dropdown menu, if I select "MIDI Key & Linkage Editor", it lists all the kit pieces and articulations with the Midi note sent out. When I click on the kit piece articulations in the left column of this editor, it sends the midi note out which then triggers the associated kit piece and articulation in studio drummer.

I guess Jamstix doesn't send the MIDI out when you click on a kit piece with the mouse (unless there is an option that I am missing).

That's strange because if I "Set all to midi output" when right clicking in the Kit window, it will trigger EZD3 and show what note EZD3 received. As long as you found something that works though, that's all that matters.

I will try that this evening. I didn’t try that before because I still wanted the internal Jamstix audio to compare with the Studio Drummer audio. I think the option I saw was set to ONLY MIDI output but maybe I misunderstood or misread it.

This did work for clicking the kit pieces in Jamstix and having the sounds play in Studio Drummer. It does clear the audio sound associated with the kit piece in Jamstix though which doesn’t really matter once you have it set up if you’re planning to use the Studio Drummer sounds.
Thanks for the tip.

i do not have the issue that this thread is about but i just had a quick question about the behavior of your setup.

when i right click on my kit window, i see Set All to "MIDI OUTPUT ONLY."

if i choose this option and then right-click to verify, should i see a check or something next to it to show that i have selected it?

i do not but i do have MIDI ONLY in blue in the Mixer. i unselected this option and still hear audio when i click a kit piece.

this is an old project. maybe i should try a new track in reaper with jamstix to see what happens.

Hi Brian,

No check mark or any indication that MIDI OUTPUT ONLY is enabled other than the sample name bar in the Kit editor displaying MIDI OUTPUT ONLY when you click a Kit piece. Once you select it, the only way to get audio samples back is to load a Kit again.

The MIDI ONLY in the Mixer acts as a "toggle" for playing back the audio samples while still generating MIDI output. If you click on a Kit piece however, the audio sample still plays back. Hope this makes sense.

Hey Brian,

I just noticed that after you set the Kit to MIDI OUTPUT ONLY, if you "Change Sound" on any Kit piece, all of the Cymbals suddenly have the MIDI label on them.

i see that as well. i did not notice right away though. The default kit i use Rock - Default - Natural uses Myna cymbals (Meinl I guess).

I guess I looked away or something when I first tried as I did not even notice it. But the change on my system was obvious. The drum kit sort of flashed.

Pretty cool.

Thanks
Brian
