|
|
I did a complete refresh of my recording setup due to the impending end of support for Windows 10. I bought a new computer, re-installed Jamstix, re-installed and updated Reaper and upgraded my (Focusrite Scarlett) interface. Also re-installed many other plugins, but those aren't (mostly) part of this story.
Sadly, I'm experiencing intermittent and unpredictable crackles.
An important note is that much of what I'm working on right now are a bunch of drum tracks so my band can practice without a drummer. Since Jamstix is the only plugin on these 1-track projects, I thought I'd post here.
I opened a ticket with Focusrite and we reviewed a lot of computer/DAW settings. Between the tech and I, I thought we'd found the main culprits, but our success was incomplete - eventually the crackles returned. Restarting the computer always makes things better - for a while.
I *think* I've echoed my Windows 10 settings in both Reaper and Jamstix, but can't be sure.
Any thoughts on things I should check/adjust? Sorry for the vague request and thanks for any help! |

Hi Paul,
First thing I would check is that Power Management on your new computer is set to Max Performance or whatever they call it.
Second, I would run Latency Mon https://resplendence.com/latencymon to see if something is gumming up the works. |

Thanks, Azimuth!
I've already made several power management adjustments per recommendations from Focusrite.
I downloaded and ran LatencyMon and was actually a little relieved that it says I have a problem. I don't know what it means that "a DPC routine is executing for too long" but it gives me something to investigate. |

| Glad that it at least gave you something to hunt. One other thing you might want to check if you and Focusrite already haven't, is to make sure that all CPU throttling is off in your BIOS. Hope you find the answer. |

| I don't have Latency Mon in the pc I am at right now, so I don't recall the name, but go to one of the tabs in the window to try to find the culprit. One not so seldom culprits are nVidia drivers, but it can be anything else too. |

| My next problem will be figuring out what to do about the culprit once it's identified. I'm not much of an under-the-hood computer guy. Is it just about updating drivers? What if a driver is both acting up and up-to-date? |

Hi Paul,
In that case I would see if I could find an older version of the driver and install it after uninstalling the newer one. There's no guarantee that the latest version of anything is necessarily the best in every case.
After you stop the Latency Mon analysis, the ISR and DPC graph will show the biggest offenders. If you can decipher what hardware is associated with them the next thing I do is disable them in Device Manager temporarily and then retest again to see if the results change. These types of problems can be a real PITA to solve and can take time. |

Hi Paul,
I saw A_Zimuth mentioned Power Management already.
Not sure if your new audio interface uses USB or not. I saw Focusrite Scarlett mentioned but I was not sure if that was no longer being used or not.
How about the Power Management on tab in the Device Manager for the USB Hubs?
Uncheck
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
if it is checked.
Maybe you have done that since Power Management was mentioned.
