I have been using jamstix for a while under Cubase and Windows. No problems -- or at least I could work around the ones I encountered. Now I wanted to try something new, namely have Jamstix generate audio, while jamcussion generating MIDI (which I want to route through HALIon to generate various pitched sounds).

I activated 2 outputs in jamstix and routed the jamstix kit through OUT 1 and jamcussion through OUT 2. These outputs also show up in Cubase and the audio appears separated, as intended).

But now I want to get the jamcussion output to trigger a VST instrument (HALIon Sonic 2). What I get is jamstix as well as jamcussion being picked up by the VST Instrument. I can't separate the MIDI between jamstix and jamcussion. I always get the entire kit + percussions on the same MIDI track.

This may be a Cubase issue, but I only have jamstix MIDI-out as a single source as an option.

Can someone, please, point a very frustrated guy in the right direction?

-- Chris.

Hi Chris,

1) In the Drum side Kit window Kit menu, enable "No MIDI Output for Internal Sounds".

2) In the Perc side Kit window, right click in the 3d Kit window and enable "Set All To "MIDI OUTPUT ONLY"".

Thank you! That did the trick. I completely missed the menus hidden in the Kit menu. But the settings there pertain to kit and percussion. You can't have different settings for either.

A quick follow-up question: Can I separate out individual pieces from a kit too?

Have a great day!

Yes, in the Kit window assign each kit piece to a different MIDI channel and save the kit with a new name.

I did that. There are only two kit pieces in the percussion kit, one assigned to channel 1 and the other to channel 2. Both are set to MIDI output only. On the DAW side (Cubase 12), I have only one possible source related to Jamstix, though, which has both kit pieces on it, regardless of their channel assignment.

I suspect this needs to be solved on the Cubase side, though.

Thanks again for your help!

OK, I did some in-depth research and figured it out by myself. It's a bit more involved in Cubase to send different midi channels coming from one source to different midi tracks. You have to use the midi input transformer in Cubase.

Here's an example sending two kit pieces to two different midi tracks. This assumes that you have setup the Jamstix side already (i.e., you set them to, e.g., ch#1 and ch#2)

1) Create two midi tracks in Cubase.
2) Assign jamstix - MIDI Out as their input source.
3) Set their output source to the desired VST instrument
4) ACtivate the midi inupt transformer for the first track. The way you do this has changed between versions of Cubase but it is located as an option in the first section of the track inspector. Either it's a little icon in the top right (pre 12) or it is a drop down menu right under "Retrospective Recording" (12).
5) Choose the "local" or "track" option.
6) Select "Open Panel" (12)
7) Then select Module 1
Cool Under factory presets, choose channel filtering.
9) Select the appropriate channel to filter
10) Do this for the other midi track too.

This works like a charm, when you preview your project. However, it doesn't work when you use the mouse to audition a kit piece in jamstix. That's due to a bug in jamstix, by which all audition clicks are sent to channel 1.

Hope that helps.
