|

Probably been asked before but I can't find it.
I have edited the kick drum in a measure to suit my song by removing one hit, adding one hit and changing the power on two hits. The rest of the style is fine. I'd like to apply these changes to all bars in a part.
I know I can copy and paste a limb from bar to bar but (1) it seems like I shouldn't have to do this one bar at a time, and (2) it doesn't seem to copy the absence of a hit - in other words, the hit that I removed from the copied bar doesn't disappear in the pasted bar.
I hope that's clear. I also hope it's possible. What say ye? |

i have never tried this so i do not know the answer to your questoin. hopefully Azimuth or someone who knows chimes in.
in the meantime, you can try copying the Kick parts from the measure that you have the way you want it. then do a clear limb for this part and paste to each measure after unlocking the part. then click on the cell where the first kick should be then ctrl/v to paste. then right arrow and repeat until the end of the part. then lock it again. it seems like a lot but you can zip through a part pretty quickly this way. i will look at the manual to see if there is a modifier that allows for pasting to all parts at once.
i know this a pain but at least you do not have to delete the kick part that is not being deleted one at a time and paste what you want.
of course save the song first so if you have to go back you can.

Hi Paul,
Add Groove To Style (Pg. 48 in the manual) is the way to do what you want but while I was looking into this for you I discovered that it's not working correctly. I have reported this to Ralph but with the holiday it might take a while for him to check it out. Here's a way you can do it though:
CREATE A RESTORE POINT FIRST!!!!
1 ) Create a dummy song part in your song. Clear all events in it: Right click the Bar Editor limb label (LH,RH.....)>Clear Limb>Clear Limb For This Part.
2 ) Bar>Edit>Copy Bar: copy the # of bars that contain the Kick pattern you like.
3 ) Bar>Edit>Paste Bar: paste the # of copied bars into your dummy song part.
4 ) Clear all limbs in the Bar Editor NOT containing kicks in the dummy song part. Right click the Bar Editor limb label (LH,RH.....)>Clear Limb>Clear Limb For This Part.
5 ) Add a Groove Importer in the song part you want the kick pattern added to.
6 In the dummy song part (which should only contain the Kick you like now): Bar>Turn Groove Into Style>Choose the number of Bars you want.
7 ) In the Groove Importer you added to the song part you'd like the Kick in, change it to "Jamstix Groove" from "MIDI Groove">click "<click to load>",highlight Bar Groove.j2d in the right column, click the "Preview" box to make sure it sounds correct> click the Import button. If you've got "Full" enabled, you may not need to click the Import button.
8 ) Delete the dummy song part if no longer needed.
Hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask. |

Thank you both for dedicating your time and expertise to finding workarounds for my issue.
It took a while (because, among other things, I kept trying {right click part name}> Import Groove when I needed Brain > Add > Groove Importer) but I eventually got both of your methods to work. I found I needed to add TheSystem's "clear limb" process to Azimuth's steps.
In the end, both processes got me where I wanted to go.
However, both solutions were temporary. If I tweaked any other parameter in the part, the recomposition added back the kick drum hits I wanted to delete. I searched the manual to see if I could lock just one limb, and it doesn't seem like I can.
So I came up with a Plan B, which was to "Extract from Other Style" the kick drum grid from Jamstix Classic. I can delete or power down any existing kick drum brain-thing and I get what I want, except all at the same power level. If I play with dials or drop-down menus in the brain, my new kick drum part persists. I think I'm okay with the power thing. This is close enough to what I want.
Thanks again for the suggestions! I learned a few new things by walking through your instructions. |

Quick follow-up to say that things are not always as they appear.
My "Plan B" worked great on a part where I was using the Spirit Funk style but not so much where I was using Basic Linear.
My workaround to that will be, I think, to change the Basic Linear part to Spirit Funk or something else and continue on my way. It's a bandage rather than a solution but I'm anxious to get on with my recording and stop fighting the drums. |
