My question is: if I use BFD external to Jamstix (i.e. Jamstix as the input on a separate track with BFD as it's output) then Jamstix won't know i'ts "driving" BFD. In this case I guess I'd need to use my GM -> BFD Drum Map as Jamstix will use "native" GM?

The best way to do this is to check the box 'MIDI Out Only' and then load a BFD mapping into Jamstix. The checked box will cause Jamstix to load the BFD key mapping but not actually load the BFD plugin. The MIDI output is now in BFD format and can be routed to the BFD instance in the rack.

A related point: do you plan to exploit the additional hits available in BFD XFL / BFD Deluxe - e.g. 1/4 and 3/4 High Hats? If so, I guess you'll use the specific BFD mappings which, again, differ from GM (there all Kick Drums on my GM definition).

Jamstix "thinks" in closed, semi and open hats at this time. We are planning on continuous HH opening for Jamstix 2, which can then take advantage of CC04 hihat control in BFD.
