I am getting more and more into jamstix as my one and only Drum VST, so I have been trying to export Midi grooves and import them into jamstix

Is the groove editor going to be able to "play," or more importantly, "write" over the Groove? If so, how do I enable this?

In other words, I have a basic verse to import, but I want that to just be a base for the AI to work on...how do I set that up, and I asked this outside of the jamcussion as I am still working on that

Thanks

Here you can watch an old video on JS3 about that. I hope it helps.

I would also suggest experimenting with the Wrapping function of the Groove Importer which creates some really interesting pattern variations or will extend common time signature imports for use with uncommon time sigs. It's another one of Jamstix' secret weapons IMO.

This is from the manual. I guess I missed this part. I know I have never tried it.

17.1.8 Groove Importer

The groove importer is the focus of the ‘Import’ style but can also be added to any style via the ‘Add’ submenu of the brain menu. It allows you to load a MIDI drum pattern, Jamstix 1 rhythm or saved Jamstix groove and have it fed into the composition process. If other groove elements are present, you will get a mix of the imported groove and them. Please watch the
video ‘Creating Your Own Base Groove’ for more details.

Use the ‘Power’ knob to attenuate or amplify the velocities of the imported notes as desired.

Note that the importer can handle multi-bar MID files as well as sequential Jamstix groove files for multi-bar rhythms. The latter are files with the same name but the suffix _Bx with x>=1. These files are generated when you save a bar and specify more than 1 bar to save.

If your part has a time signature that is different from the signature of your source groove, you can use wrapping to have Jamstix repeat the groove to fill the bar by selecting the number of 16ths in the soure groove per bar. Furthermore, you can use different wrapping values to experiment with interesting ‘slicing’ of your source groove.

The groove importer is an awesome tool to breathe life into those hundreds of static MIDI patterns you may have laying around on your hard drive!

Awesome replies

Thank you guys.

I think a little YouTube video from Rayzoon on the secret weapons or awesome features would be really helpful as well

This VST is so damn incredible, I am so glad I bought the Ultimate edition

PS this is insignificant but it says “studio version 4.4.6” in the GUI instead of ultimate, does anyone else have an updated GUI after the upgrade or it just stays “studio” for everyone ?

Studio 4.4.6 here. Ultimate just includes all of the Mini-Paks which are add ons and not technically a core part of Jamstix.

I have been playing a lot with your suggestion of wrapping. Can you explain what the [number factor] X [number factor] mean, or rather, what type of controls those variables exert on the imported track....if you dont mind of course. I actually love the variability it creates, i just wanted to understand what I’m manipulating with those integers.

Let's use 4/4 as an example CR. You've got 16 16th beats across the 4 Bars. If you set the Wrapping to 8x16, the first 8 beats of your import will play and then on beat #9 the first 8 beats will repeat again. If you set it to 9x16, the first 9 beats will play and then on beat #10, the first 9 beats will repeat again but beats #8 & #9 will be "dropped". 10X16 Wrapping will result in beats #1-#10 playing, repeat, and beats #7 - #10 being "dropped" now.

It also works the other way around. If you import a 4/4 midi clip into Jamstix and set your Song Part time sig to 9/4, beats #5 - #9 will be empty with No Wrapping chosen. If you now set the wrapping it will "loop" the imported clip to fill out the empty bars.

I'd suggest just hand editing a simple kick on 1&3, Snare on 2&4 with steady 8th hats and then add a Groove Importer and step through the Wrap settings from 1x16 on up through the choices and observe how the events in the Bar Editor move in response to your selection.

Then create an empty 9/4 Song Part, hand edit that same pattern for beats #1 - #4 and step through the Wrap setting again and observe the result. Make sure to go past 16x16 this time to see what happens.

You can generate some really wild stuff with the Wrapping function once you get a grasp on what it is doing. HTH

Thanks so much! I’m going to tweak beat by beat to see how to affect change.

That definitely makes “the feel” tighter. This VST is so intricate I feel I’m doing myself a disservice by not simply and solely concentrate on that part of “my rig,” I just have so much going on besides the drums that I am trying to record and mix/master...

It’s funny - with so much on my plate, Jamstix both helps with the workload, but then creates a new rabbit hole to wander down because of its expansive customizability...and then pairing it with other drum VST’s often yields unexpectedly awesome results like the wrapping.
