I was really sad to hear about Neil Peart's passing away today. Aside from the loss of an amazing musician who inspired untold numbers of others with his talents, the world also lost a man who personified class.
I saw Rush 7 times back in the 70's & 80's. It seemed I couldn't go to a concert for a while where Rush was not the opening act. I used to joke with my friends that if I went to see the Boston Pops, Rush would probably be the opening act.
Before Rush struck it big, they had to be one of the hardest working bands trying to make it to the top. They always put on great shows even in front of unappreciative crowds waiting for the headliners to take the stage, which I witnessed a few times.
Rush was not for everyone but their talent and uniqueness is unquestioned. They would never have become the band they became without Neil Peart's incredible drumming and lyrics.

His drumming and lyrics will be heard, appreciated and enjoyed forever.

While not a founding member, I'd argue that he was the most important member. Look at the lyrics on the first album compared to what followed. Without Neil Rush would have faded into obscurity IMO.
