Is there any known issue with the AU version and midi output? I‘m trying to send the midi output from Jamstix 4 into EZ Drummer 2.
In Mac version of Reaper with the VSTi plugins, all is well. In Logic Pro with the AU plugin, no dice.
Some notes:
- current versions of OS X, Logic Pro, Jamstix, and EZD2
- I do have the MIDI output enabled in jamstix settings
- Hooking up a MIDI Monitor in Logic Pro’s MIDI “Environment” shows no midi output coming from Jamstix
- I do see the MIDI out indicator in Jamstix flashing green
- I have successfully wired other “brains” like Logic’s built-in drummer into EZD, so I think my basic methodology is ok

| This is only from memory so take it with a grain of salt, but I think I remember someone earlier reporting that Logic does not support midi out from AU plug ins. I don't use OS X so I cannot verify that and apologize if my statement is incorrect. |

I think you're correct! It's hard to suss out the current situation from searching online as it seems like things have changed over the years, was hard for me to determine if it's an AU format limitation, a Logic implementation limitation, or if something called AUv3 is a solution to the problem.
Looks like my earlier experiments succeeded because the instruments I was feeding into EZD were built into Logic, and maybe are not exactly AU plugins.
I've found a nice workaround with Bluecat's Patchwork plugin. I loaded the VST version of Jamstix in there, feeding it into EZ Drummer 2 within patchwork.
Important things to make it work were:
- Use a software instrument track in logic, and load Patchwork via the "AU MIDI-controlled effects" category in the Logic virtual instrument plugin selector. Never had to use that one before!
- Load the VST version of Jamstix into Patchwork. (Patchwork lets you use VSTs in Logic). AU did not work for this.
- Load EZD on the same path. VST or AU didn't matter, so I used AU.
- Turn on MIDI output not only within Jamstix, but from Patchwork's point of view (right click Jamstix's slot in Patchwork, enable a MIDI output port, say Port A
- From Patchwork, enable a MIDI input port on EZD, matching the output port chosen for Jamstix
Success! Thank you. Only used this for about 5 minutes, will update if I run into any problems for anyone that reads this in the future. |

| That's great to hear that you found a workable solution. Just for my personal curiosity since I don't use OS X, why would you use the AU version of a plugin over the vst version if either works? What are the advantages? |

I only dabble off and on in Apple myself, am currently trying out a 90 day trial of Logic Pro after not having a Mac for 5 years or so.
The situation is that the Apple-developed DAWs like Logic Pro and GarageBand only support the AU format, never VST. VST is only possible in these DAWs via 3rd-party wrapper plugins like the one I just used.
So the AU is preferred since it's the only choice without hacks/wrappers.
VST works in other DAWs on Mac just fine, like Reaper.
As for any technical differences, I'm not a serious enough user to know any pros or cons. Well until yesterday anyway. No MIDI out to other plugins with AU I guess  |
