No tuts covering driving a 3rd party plug with JS4 yet as far as I know.

First reboot your computer if you haven't yet.
What OS are you running? What DAW? If Reaper, I can tell exactly step by step how it is done.

I can't get Jamstix to trigger ADD2.

Also, MIDI exports miss a lot of seemingly random notes...(Sonar as host). This is quite frustrating.

As amazing as JS is it's always been a bit frustrating to use, you gotta spend a lot of time with it..get to know it and then it's awesome, problem is I don't always have the time..A good long tut covering all aspects would be fab!
other drum vst's have lots of tut's...
c'mon Ralph..do a detailed tut please.. Smile

Just wanted to update my last post: I finally got the Jmstx/ADD2 connection working. It turned out to be the 'special' MIDI only drummer to be the key element here.

Jamstix is a very deep piece of software which also carries whith it quite some baggage from all its iterations. Very understandable.

As enthusiastic as I am (jeez, I've had a fantastic jam with the Bonham drummer a few days ago! What a treat !) it is indeed in need of a few indepth tuts covering the most common issues.

Not to be nitpicking here: it is obvious that Ralph has put a great amount of effort into the GUI to make it as intuitive as possible but I'm afraid that most pple aren't up to tackling the rather steep learning curve and the idiosyncratic peculiarities which come whith it.

for example: it literally took me hours to hear the Jamcussion module for the first time, until I found out that you had to press shift to unmute it!

This is arcane.

Rayzoon being a developper as responsive as we can think of I propose a specific thread in which concrete suggestions could be made (like a mute/unmute button, or a single click to disable/enable the jamcussion module) in order to help Ralph out in getting a better feel for the newbie perspective.

This and video tutorials (yes, it takes a lot of time to produce, but it's just the standard nowadays).

As an old school DAW musician Jamstix is by far the most unique and exciting plugin I've encountered so far. BIAB or Stylus were always a lukewarm, almost frigid (and messy) experience. Jamstix deserves a good dedicated tutorial and suggestion area.

I have several thoughts for this thread.

1. The manual is updated to version 4. I'm mentioning this because I drop in on the forum somewhat regularly and I've elected to be in the beta program but just discovered the version 4 update of the manual this month. It's very well written, much better than most other music software product manuals. With that said it's more reference than how-to oriented.

2. I go back to the DOS days with BIAB and Jammer. For practicing and learning Jazz standards they were OK but the drumming was obviously machine like. Jamstix drumming right out of the box is way better, the main complaint I had was that the fills were too busy. This motivated me to keep at it and learn as much as I can about Jamstix.

Jonathan Clark (DJ Bolivia) did a 4 part YouTube Jamstix tutorial on version 3 which is close enough to 4 to be very useful. I sped it up to 1.25x speed and was able to follow it fine. He put a lot of work into those and I thank him for the effort. I found them more useful after I had spent about 6 months with Jamstix even though he kept it simple.

3. I started out trying to build a song to match a cover, picking out a drummer, style and song parts that on paper were good choices but didn't really play what I had in mind. Now with that hindsight I recommend people new to Jamstix look in the Build section under "Your Song Structure" and pick 12 Bar Blues from the Presets button. Then choose Drum Style "Basic Rock" and Drummer "James Stix" and hit the Create Song button. Then hit play in your DAW and in Jamstix choose the "GROOVE" tab on top and then FILL in the line below (where it says Groove | Accent | Fill). Then dial back the T-Fills (transition between parts fills) and R-Fills (fills inside repeats of the same parts). Then go into GROOVE and test what each control does while it plays. Something that wasn't clear to me when I started is that you only see the drum symbols for the fills if you're in the FILL section of the brain.

4. I don't think Ralph should make the tutorials. I think his time is better spent improving the product and I think advanced users would be better for the tutorial. I think a webinar session with out any scripting where one person runs Jamstix and a second persons moderates, collecting questions people type in the chat box and then asking the person running Jamstix to show how to accomplish what is asked would be helpful. I'm not advanced enough to be the operator but would be happy to to help moderate. I nominate A_Azimuth for presenter Very Happy
