Hi - just upgraded to Jamstix 4 - loving it!

I have a couple of questions:

- Ride Bell Brain Element - there was a knob to adjust ride bell amount in JS3, but I do not see it in JS4.

- JS3 allowed you to play the drum kit visually by clicking the mouse, and the closer to the center of the drum, the louder it was. You could also trigger the bell or the ride on cymbal. I can't seem to make this happen in JS4.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Neither of those are in JS4, correct. Unfortunately I can't tell you why, that will have to be handled by Ralph.

When you say "adjust the ride amount" are you speaking of the volume/velocity of the hits?

If so, you can adjust that in the Bar Editor. Select the notes and adjust the level on the left with the Power adjustment.

The Bar Editor is really nice to adjust hits like you need in your songs. Lots of flexibility and control.

In JS3 there was an actual "Amount" control included with the Ride Bell effector that adjusted the percentage of notes played on the Ride bell.

Thanks for the feedback.

I use SD, and being able to audition the sounds with the dynamics helped when choosing different drums, ride vs. bell, etc.

I noticed the bell amount knob was missing when I loaded a previous song I had in J3 - the ride sound was replaced by the bell. I tried using the other bell drop down options, but I can't seem to get the same ride / bell combo with JS4 as I had with J3.

I'd be curious to hear Ralph's thoughts on these items...

Long story short: the 'Amount' control from JS3 used randomization. Since the element is a play filter, which gets run at the moment the notes is scheduled to be played, the 3D kit could not 'pre-move' to it. Aside from that, random bell notes are actually something drummers rarely would do. We decided that the available distribution modes in JS4 (by weight, on kick and snare or off kick and snare) should be sufficient to create the bell behavior of most drummers.

Thanks Ralph - makes sense. I played with the different bell / ride options and they are very musical.

btw - add me to the list of the converted. I thought the Virtual Kit GUI was cool but that I wouldn't use it much. It really helped me to clearly visualize the different ride / bell patterns.
