|
|
I am looking for advice on the best way to run Jamstix in multi out mode with each close mic sound basically in mono so I can mix the drums in my DAW. It seems that JS is setup now for 8 stereo busses, 16 outs. but each instrument needs to be output steering close mic sounds, and its not clear to me if that is just because its internally panned that way or if they are actual stereo samples to begin with that were recorded as stereo.
what i really want is for close kick, close snare, hi hats, tom1, tom2, etc..all go to their own separate mono channel, and then maybe one stereo channel for the ambient mix. Then I will mix it myself in my DAW, applying compression, EQ, transient shaper, etc. on each kit piece separately. But I can't figure out how to do this other then just hard pan the sounds in the kit definition. But I would like to know if I am giving up any important stereo imaging this way that was captured in the original sample recording session, or if anyone has any other suggestions. |

Close-Mic sounds (CS) in Jamstix are true stereo, recorded with dual mic setups. This is unusual compared to other plugins but we felt the results can be very useful. If you want to use mono, send the ambience to a separate channel and don't use CS sounds. That way the other stereo outputs carry a mono signal. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

you lost me a little bit. So I was already assuming that the ambient mics always go to the last output pair. is that not always the case? are you saying that be default each of the 8 stereo pairs outputs the total sound of whatever is assigned to it, including ambient and close mics?
I'm a little confused on that point.
So you're saying when you recorded the drum samples you used both a stereo close mic pair on every piece, as well as ambient stereo over heads?
That is definitely not standard for sure....but it is what it is..if that is how you recorded them, then I would not want to ruin whatever sense of space is achieved that way, I guess? I'm not sure why you did stereo close mics on each piece. Seems like there would be phasing issues as well. |

Hi Dewdman,
What Ralph is saying is that there are both mono AND stereo close mic samples for most of the kit pieces. If you right click on the kit piece, choose "Change Sound", you will see that for most sample sets there are 2 different sets for most pieces. For example, "Snare - 14" DP2" is the close mic mono sample set whereas "Snare - 14" DP2 CS" is the close mic stereo sample set. |

| Ok, well if that's true I can build kits using the mono samples I guess. But why would I want to keep using the CS ones? I'm not really understanding why they even exist |
