trying to come up with a tight-ish R&B-ish beat - and it just sounds sooooo fake.

is it the swing? I need some kind of swing on it, but this sounds unreal...

is it the sound?

I can't find it to sound horrible - maybe the intro sounds a bit lame, I would make it busier!

yeah the intro is bunk, but what about the next part? The hihat just sounds... ugghhh

Check 16th shuffle in the song sheet for the part and move the shuffle strength up until it sounds good.
