Hello cheps,
I've been a member of PRS for years and I've just found out that registering material with them does NOT constitute registering a copyright. What do they do to earn their money ? Beats me. Anyway, I now need to copyright a whole bunch of songs on the quick. Can anybody suggest how to do that on the cheap ? For free ?

Don't know where you're based, but here in the UK, copyright happens automatically on composition of the song, recording of the track, taking of the picture -no "registration" is needed, it's not like a patent.
That said, the problem can sometimes be proving it.
recording onto CD-R (reasonable longevity) and leaving in a sealed package with a proof of posting, or leaving it sealed with your solicitor (lawyer) can usually be seen as "proof" of copright ownership.
The problem is, you probably won't do this with stuff unless you know there's going to be a problem, and usually by that time, it's too late to do it!
Whatever packing you put it in, mp3 you generate should have copyright so-and-so, 2012 or whatever on or embedded in it somewhere. If you don't spell it out, someone will use that against you.
I don't know how different it is in the US, sorry...
