i just spent the day fiddling around with jamstix and loved it so much i've gone and pre-ordered.

but...one thing is kinda bothering me.

it seems that using jamstix to host dll files is so far not very stable, i've had more crashes today that have locked up my computer and needed a full restart than i have in ages, and always when trying to load vsti's.

Ableton Live 4.1 is the worst offender crashes are completely unpredictable, it stalls and splutters fairly regularly .
Drumatic 3 usually works but not always, Short circuit won't load its interface, Sfz sometimes works is quite stable though.

Anyways, it seems to make perfect sense to me to forget about hosting other plug ins and merely use Jamstix as a high falutin mfx. The midi out ought to alow me to trigger other vsti's and modules but after several hours of frustration i've got nowhere, either i'm really stoopid and have missed something obvious..... or it just doesn't work.

So how about an extra midi pipe kinda plug ( audioM8 style thing in reverse ) that sends midi from jamstix to another track to trigger a vst /external module and thus negates the need to sort out all the hosting malarky ?

ooh yes ...and theres a little bug in Sonar 4 that means tool tips don't stay long enough to read them.

cheers

Hi Lucky,
Thanks for pre-ordering!

These issues are difficult to debug unless we can duplicate them. However, we are constantly working on the sub-host code and will continually improve stability. The 1.0 release will already come with various small improvements that may eliminate some of these crashes for you already.

Could you tell us more about your system like CPU, RAM, host name & version and versions of the crashing DLLs?

In Cubase SX, all you have to do is add your VST drum module, add a MIDI track and set its input to Jamstix and its output to your module. That's it (and pull down the volume in Jamstix so it is quiet).

In Sonar 4, you need to use DirectiXer as your VST/DXi wrapper because it is the only wrapper to support MIDI-out for VSTi. DirectiXer will give you an additional MIDI port in Sonar, which will carry the MIDI data from Jamstix.

Hope this helps!

Works fine here. How long do yours stay up?

hmmmm

thanks for your quick response.

my machine ...

p4 2.8 laptop
1gig ram
winxp sp1
motu 828mkII firewire
external usb2 drive

troublesome hosts...

ableton live 4.1
sonar 4
fruity loops 5.02

every vsti i have tried has crashed at some point some survive more tweakage than others, but the issue is general stability.

I also notice that it always takes two attempts to load a dll, after the first time i select and press open it returns to the dll browser i open again and then it works.

I suspect that this may be significant. Confused

all well and good, but i don't want to have to buy more software to make this thing run, and would DirectiXer that solve the same issue in Ableton and Fruity Loops ?...be nice if it would.

so how does the mid channel thing work ?

I also can't help but comment on Jamstix stability when using external DLLs. I have Sonar 3 - and Jamstix really has trouble if I invoke an external vst (say rgc sfz free player)... and then try to revert back to the internal drum set. If I try to revert AGAIN to an external vst, I am really asking for trouble. Re-booting Sonar is the only recourse.

I did get Sampletank2XL to work for awhile. But it eventually froze after 5 minutes.

Also - the Jamstix automatic help tips box (place mouse pointer over any button) flashes like crazy and is almost impossible to read (using Sonar 3).

I have 1Gb of Ram, 3GHz 60gb hd laptop WinXP.

I'm still having lots of fun with it though.

We're working on releasing an updated demo soon that should fix at least some of these problems.

That's another one we're trying to track down. Which DXi wrapper are you using?

Yes, we are able to duplicate this flashing with the Cakewalk VST adapter. It doesn't happen in other hosts nor with DirectiXer. We'll try to find a fix for it.

Thanks!
