|

I'm picking my way through the manual and Jamstix3; I've only been using it for a few hours.
I want to play Superior Drummer2 with the Jamstix creations. I'm trying to do this the non-subhosting way (I'd like to slot Jamstix into copies of previous projects using SD), my DAW is REAPER 3.71
I think I understand the way to tell JS3 that I'm using a SD kit is to choose one of the Toontrack presets from the kit selection menu. What I'm unsure of though, does this automatically subhost in instance of the SD VSTi?
If I add SD to the REAPER track after JS, the memory usage indicator suggests that there is more than one SD instance loaded. I f this is the case, how do I unload the subhosted SD plug, or better still, prevent it being loaded in the first place?
I know that if you click "MIDI only" in the mixer, JS unloads its drum sound samples. but this doesn't seem to improve the SD memory usage, suggesting that the plug is still subhosted.
I appreciate that loading a kit in JS loads the kit components, a key map (MIDI mapping?), mixer settings, etc, which are individually excludable, but I'm stuggling to read what's going on here from the JS GUI.
To recap, I'd like to load the SD configurations and MIDI mapings, but I'd like to send MIDI only from JS to SD.
Many thanks,
Nathan

Do this:
- check MIDI OUT ONLY in JS3 mixer
- load a SD2 kit in Jamstix (this will NOT load the SD DLL due the above setting)
- load SD into the host and route MIDI to it from JS _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Anybody?
I know I woffled on a bit in my previous post, but in summary I'm looking for the differences in setting up Jamstix3 to:
1) Subhost SD2
2) set JS with a drumkit, note-names and MIDI values to play a SD kit via MIDI only (no subhosting)
I'm not really any clearer after reading the manual on how to do either setup; the method I have gleaned, well, I don't know which of the two above things it actually acheives...

Thanks Ralph, I think our posts crossed, only just seen your reply.
The trick is to do it in that order then? -it'll load the settings, names & mapping without the plug?
Is there any way of unloading a subhosted VSTi once loaded?
I'll try this later on tonight if I can get a few mins in the studio, thanks very much for your help.

Checking MIDI OUT ONLY unloads any loaded DLL right at that time. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks, I'll check that out, I got the impression from memory usage that this was not happening; I'll check further now I know the actual operation.
As a brand-new user of Jamstix, I've got to say I'm impressed -I'm just struggling to find time to explore as much as I'd like. I'm hoping this will save me a lot of time going from dots or drum grid to recording for some jobs.

I had a play with this last night and found tha if the "MIDI-only " button is pressed before loading the SD kit, the presets are loaded without the SD dll as you explained.
...but if it is pressed after the dll is loaded, although it gives indications that the subhosted plugin has been dispensed with, only about 10MB of memory is released. If there is a GB of samples involved in a particular SD kit and setup, this memory would be unavailable until Jamstix was restarted.
Is this a peculiarity of my system? This is why I thought I was doing something wrong.
I'm using REAPER 32-bit on an XP(32) Q6600 with 4GB of RAM.

I'll look into that. In the meantime, your workaround is good. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
