I'm evaluating Studio One as a replacement DAW for Sonar, which has become unusable to me due to an unmanageable amount of new bugs introduced with their X1 release (even two patches later) plus Cakewalk's refusal to fix long-standing old bugs.
However, in the little bit of time testing Studio One so far, it has crashed a few times, every time due to Jamstix.
Since being able to use Jamstix is critical to me, I'm wondering whether Rayzoon is testing Jamsix against Studio One.
BTW, I'm using JS 3.1.3 Beta 2, Studio One v1.64 Demo 32-bit.
EDIT: Here is the call stack. It crashes here every single time when I try to open the Studio One song:

We do not actively test with Studio One. Due to time constraints, we focus mostly on mainstream DAWs.
Have you tried running Studio One as admin? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Yes I tried to run it as admin - it didn't make a difference.
This is a bit disappointing though. There are many ex-Sonar users defecting to Studio One due to the current state of Sonar. Yes Studio One probably isn't very "mainstream" right now, but it is definitely one of the up and coming DAWs. _________________ Intel DX48BT2, Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR3, Edirol FA-66, Studio One 2, Sonar X3e x64, JS 3.6.0, Windows 8.1 Pro x64 |

I zipped all the recent JS3 logs and emailed it to support. _________________ Intel DX48BT2, Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR3, Edirol FA-66, Studio One 2, Sonar X3e x64, JS 3.6.0, Windows 8.1 Pro x64 |

Hi Bitflipper,
Another Sonarite here. I lurk a lot on the Sonar forum, but post very little. It can be pretty risky sometimes!
Regarding Jamstix and Studio One, I also played with the PRO demo for a month. Jamstix might work with Studio One under certain circumstances. I took notes of the advantages and disadvantages compared to Sonar. I don't see any note about Jamstix, so either I didn't test it, or I did and it worked the same as in Sonar. I'm on XP SP3, so maybe that makes a difference.
My thoughts about switching DAWs:
The grass is always greener on the other side. The competition looks great at first because we tend to believe the hype. But the more you discover the truth behind the hype and experience the program for yourself, the more you see that each DAW is different, but not necessarily better. You just trade one set of advantages/disadvantages for another. This may in fact mean that another DAW is better for you if its advantages are important to you and you don't care about its disadvantages.
That wasn't true for me. Because I've been with Sonar for so long, my work flow and even some of my gear is built around Sonar. So I couldn't live with these Studio One diasadvantages:
Does not at all work with Emulator X VSTi
Works at best 50% with Alphatrack and Tranzport
Does not use instrument definitions
Does not use track folders
Has no midi event view
Has no staff view
Represents midi values as 0-100
Has no step sequencer
You may say "Just wait, all those things will be fixed or added in the next release." But I spent enough time on the Studio One forum to see that its almost exactly like the Sonar forum. Somethings have not been addressed even though users have begged for them from the beginning, and worse yet, the developer's response to other things is that they currently have no intention of going down that road.
The other solution, if you can afford the money to purchase and the time to learn more than one DAW, is to simply commit to more than one. I'm not in that position at the moment, so I'm sticking with Sonar for now, 8.5.3 until further notice. By the way, I did the same thing with Reaper and came to the same conclusion.
Sorry for the long off-topic post, but the people on the Sonar and Studio One forums probably would not have appreciated it very much. |

Hi p_theisen,
Just a quick note: I'm not the same BitFlipper as the one in the CakeWalk forum. If you note I joined Rayzoon as well as KVR forums before the "CakeWalk" BitFlipper joind their forums. This often leads to confusion when Sonarites see me posting on other forums, so I just want to make sure you are aware of that.
Thanks for jumping in with some info regarding Sonar vs Studio One. This is really valuable to me as I'm still in the early stages of testing S1 so I will make sure to focus on those areas you mention.
To be honest, I have not yet dug deep into Studio One, and I am only somewhat familiar with its MIDI limitations at this point. Even so, the small amount of testing so far has reminded me of a time when technology didn't get in the way of being creative. S1's workflow is so simple and "out of the way" compared to Sonar that I can live with the more limited MIDI functionality at this point. There is a lot of Sonar's MIDI functionality I never use so I don't consider myself a MIDI power user. Once I do more testing I would know for sure whether S1 is enough for me or not. But Sonar has just become unworkable for me so I'm really open to alternatives at this point.
As far as JS3 and S1, Ralph discovered that my JS3 sample folders had restrictive permissions on them which prevented JS3 from loading its samples properly. Once I fixed that, the problem went away (thanks again Ralph for catching that!). So from my limited testing so far, JS3 and S1 seems to work OK.
I have a few custom plugins that I wrote and I found some incompatibilities with S1, but I was able to fix most of those issues as bugs within my own plugins. There is one remaining issue but I think this is also my plugins since other plugins don't seem to have the issue (events generated inside the plugin aren't playing when the transport is stopped - although JS3 can do it!). Once I solve that remaining issue with my plugins, I can do some more in depth testing with S1.
LOL, that's what happens when you mix two of your hobbies - software development and creating music - the lines start blurring and you can't tell one from the other anymore... _________________ Intel DX48BT2, Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR3, Edirol FA-66, Studio One 2, Sonar X3e x64, JS 3.6.0, Windows 8.1 Pro x64 |

| I would switch to Reaper. They have a moving from Sonar guide and lots of old Sonar folks. I switched about two years ago, and after about two weeks never switched back. There is a new release 4 about to come out, but you can get an full evaluation with no crippled features, so it is at least worth trying. |

Hi BitFlipper,
Thanks for the clarification, I would have never known there were two BitFlippers.
I don't want to get involved in the DAW wars. Everybody (and every DAW) is different. I just recommend that people do A LOT OF FIRST HAND research to determine if a particular DAW is suitable for them. Then use the one(s) you like, and don't waste time insulting other people's choices. (I'm not implying that anyone here has insulted other people's choices, I just see a lot of it on other forums and think "If only they'd put that much time and effort into their music!".) |

No DAW wars here, just practicality.Jamstix works well with Reaper.Reaper is cheap, small(Not bloated) and can even be run from a USB flash stick for portability and has immense maker's support just like Jamstix.
I can understand software comfort but sometimes it's worth a change for something that may be better and less problematic so you can carry on making music.I dumped my previous DAW even though I had paid for it and would never go back

Yes Reaper is actually one of the DAWs I'm testing. There are things I like about it and things I don't, so I'm weighing my options. I don't want to go into those details here on the JS forums though. _________________ Intel DX48BT2, Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR3, Edirol FA-66, Studio One 2, Sonar X3e x64, JS 3.6.0, Windows 8.1 Pro x64 |
