|
|
OK, here's my story... I play bass in a band, but we currently have no drummer and have been using an Alesis SR-18 drum machine to create drum tracks for a bunch of the cover songs we play. I'm looking for a software solution that will sound better and be more flexible than the Alesis. I currently plan to do more manual drum part programming than anything, but I like the idea behind the "brain" and will probably find a way to take better advantage of it in the future. Right now, to be honest, I'm looking at it as a way to get good drums sounds on a smaller budget than what I would need for EZD, AD, etc.
I've downloaded the JS3 demo, and I'm using it in Reaper. I've read through the quickstart guide and several sections of the manual, and I've got a couple of questions that are going to be key to helping decide whether to give JS3 a try:
- I've tried to create a snare roll in the bar editor to see how it sounds, and I can't get it to play when I preview the bar. Is this possible in the demo?
- Same thing for a cymbal choke
- Is there a hand clapping sound with any of the stock kits or do I have to buy a pak for that? If so, which one?
- Is there any documentation that spells out which kits are available in the demo? I've tried several that don't do anything or just give a kick sound.
Thanks for your help. |

Yes, that is possible. If you play your roll with the host (not preview), do you get red crosses on the notes?

Chokes in JS work like a real drummer. Let's say you have a crash on the right hand on beat 2. Just place a choke note on the left hand a 16th after.

Hand clapping comes with the XL version.

If you only hear kick, make sure 'Downmix' is checked in the JS3 mixer or connect all audio outputs in REAPER.
The demo has just a limited set of the standard kit so you should stick to 'Standard' in the 'Rock' folder. You can also see missing sounds, if any, listed in the kit window if you load a kit. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks for the help. I think I got it all worked out except the roll. It appears that anytime the "hit style" is set to "bounced," the sound doesn't play. If I just do several sequential snare hits, they play, but not a roll that used "bounced" style hits. And no, there are not red X's over the hits in the bar editor when they play.
Any thoughts?
BTW, I mostly used the Standard Classic kit, but I tried some others, too, and had the same result. |

Bounce samples are not included in the demo. If you got the kit editor, select the snare bounce articulation and choose 'No Sound' for it, JS should play your bounced notes albeit using normal hit samples. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Despite not directly related to the question, this bounce articulation doesn't work for me anymore. Since JS2 I didn't try it, but if I set bounce to no sound, it would produce a bounce sound. But JS3 doesn't produce any if I set the bounce key to --, nothing is played when a bounce appears in the song. I'm using MIDI Out only, though. |

Are you saying you are setting the bounce sound MIDI key to none? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Yes, to none. And then nothing happens, every time a bounce is in the song, there's no sound. |

Any specific reason why you want MIDI at none? It should work if you assign a key. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Because I want to use external drums that have no ´bounce´ articulation. JS2 worked fine without a key assigned to bounce. |
