Hi All,
I recently finished my 1st track using JS. A bit of a learning experience learning to use JS and also Reaper (both of which are now essentials) but I'm reasonably happy with the results.

I have limited time to spend on all this and if I don't call it quits I will keep tweaking and fixing and never finish - I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, it's using Mark on the Brush Kit. Most effects are the built-in Reaper plugins.
I appreciate any and all comments, critisisms or suggestions.

Nice composition,voice and performance.Reasonable recording however for me there's a common mistake of too much reverb and the vocals and drums are getting buried in the mix at points.Some of the parts need better compression and EQ applied to level them out.

Yeah, the vocals are definitely going in and out of audibility. The whole piece has confusing dynamics. But definitely good composition. Kind of sounds like I'm listening to the whole thing from the back of a bass-destroying community hall.

I'm listening to it through cheap headphones at work, so take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for the comments Sheppol_A and Petersko.
I struggled to get the lower register vocals strong enough without either those parts booming or messing up the higher register eq.
Thanks for those links Sheppol_A, I will definately check them out.
EQ is very much a mysterious black art to me at the moment.
I was originally going for that sort of Shadow Puppets or Fleet Foxes folky reverb-heavy sound but by the time I had finished recording all the parts it wasn't really that kind of song any more.
I also used different reverbs on tracks instead of sends to it hasn't got the cohesion it should - I was too lazy to go back and fix it and I should have set it up properly from the beggining (but there were new reverbs available in Reason and I needed to try them all).
I was mixing as I went and I realise that I should have started from scratch once I had finished recording - another lesson to take away.

I'm in the same boat as you - Reaper and Jamstix. But unlike you I'm just a total beginner.

I really liked Bones, very well done. Maybe the vocals should have been louder though? You have a great voice.

Hi LP_Rob,
Today I was running around having a water-fight with some younger relatives and got a bit sunburnt! I hope your cooler Christmas was as much fun.
Anyway, thanks for listening. With all the comments on vocals being too quiet I might have to make a change.

Is it the whole track's vocals or just sections that people think should be louder?
I really dislike the pop single mixes where the vocal just about masks the music so I try to avoid that - especially as it is my own voice so maybe I go too far the other way because of that...?
After all, I know what's being said

I know that it gets a little too soft in the verses when I use the lower register but those same sections got 'boomy' when I boosted those words. Fixing that took too much body out of the rest of the vocal.
Anyone got any tips on how I might overcome that? I'm pretty sure that tried using separate eq for the problem sections but it sounded out of place.

BTW- Sheppol_A; those links are great. I haven't had time to go through them properly but there's enough info in there to keep me busy for a while.
