|
|
Hi - Page 43 of the JS2 manual suggests, I think, that there is a way to control the overall song power level. In SX3, I know how to draw automation curves for each individual MIDI track, but not for the song as a whole .
Can someone point me towards that "whole song" automation track please?
The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to force JS2 to follow the emotion of the song, set more by the chords, rhythm, and choice of instruments than by changes in song volume.
Thanks! _________________ Alexis

Excellent, thanks!
Edit:
I'm having a hard time figuring out why the drums get really soft in "Jam with MIDI", and I think it's because I don't have a good feel for where the sounds "go".
If I want to Jam with JS2, the user manual says:
1) Add Jamstix to your project.
2) Make sure you have a MIDI track with output = Jamstix. What should the input be?
3) Enable "input Echo" or "Input Monitoring" of the MIDI track I'm guessing that's the littl orange/brown speaker icon?
4) Set Jamstix to "Jam with MIDI".
I put an automation envelope in a Jamstix track, but the volume I got when I "Jammed with MIDI" didn't seem to follow it. I could have trouble shooted further by turning off my Cubase VST instruments and just listening to the MIDI coming in from my synthesizer to see if that was what was being followed, but I didn't think of that till just now.
I think part of the trouble is I'm confused about how many Jamstix MIDI tracks I should have open when I'm jamming with MIDI - there's the one Ralph refers to in this thread, and there's also the one on page 17 of the manual: "Jamstix outputs all its notes as MIDI to the host. This means ... you can record the output of Jamstix to a MIDI track in your host...".
Should there be 1 Jamstix MIDI track or two? If one - input and output to JS2? If two tracks, if someone could help me with the Input and Output on each, and which one to draw the automation curve, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks!
Can someone help me out please with the bits in red above, and also which "MIDI track" Ralph are you saying to put the envelope in (your post just above this one)?

For recorded MIDI it doesn't matter, for live MIDI it would be your live MIDI source.

Depends on the host. This is only important for live MIDI data anyway.

4) Set Jamstix to "Jam with MIDI".

Don't use that mode if you wish to use a song power automation envelope. use the no input jam mode instead. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks, Ralph.
The track I put the automation on (as above) - what should the input and output be (Jamstix, synth, etc.).
Also, would I just need that one JS track open, or another one also (my reading of the manual makes me wonder if I need two, as above).

Since you'll be using No Input Jam it doesn't matter. You should probably set the track to 'No Input' just to avoid possible MIDI feedback.

I don't see the need for more than one track. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph - I tried to do this, and got a result I didn't understand, could you (or anyone else ) help me with this please?
Here's how I set up JS2:
I took a virgin project in Cubase SX3, and created an automation to a MIDI track. It varied a lot - plateaus up at 127, down to zero, up and down several times. I put the output to JS2, input to the track "no input".
I put JS2 into Jam No Input Mode.
In the song list, I just made a generic 30 bar song, no repeat.
I picked a random drummer (Stewart?).
Then I played a loop in SX3.
What I thought I would hear is JS2 varying the drumming based on the velocity of the automation track. But what I heard was that the drummnig was the same no matter what the velocity of the track was.
What am I doing/expecting wrong?
Thanks for any help! _________________ Alexis

OK, I spent hours on this single problem yesterday, here's what I found out:
1) When I right clicked on the volume/power knob in JS2, I found that it's "Velocity" function had been assigned to "None". The only way I could make things work was by assigning it to "Controller 7". Assigning it to Controller 6, or Controller 8, or even 2 or 10, or even to "Power" didn't work!
I didn't see anything in the manual about making this assignment. I'm guessing that it's not how it comes out of the box, so somehow in my sleep I must have reassigned it.
Though I'm happy I at least got it working so that an automation curve will adjust the power knob, I'm worried a bit that I might have done this "wrong", in a way that might lead to instability later:
1) Why is Controller 7 the only one in my setup that will allow the Power/Velocity knob to respond to MIDI automation? Is Controller "Power" supposed to be the one?
2) In addition to Ralph's suggestion to use "Jam - no input", I found that "Jam with MIDI" was able to read my automation for volume/velocity just as well. Is there something under the hood that makes "Jam with MIDI" not as good at this?
Thanks in advance for any help! _________________ Alexis
