Hi.

Does Jamstix function in standalone mode or does it need a host?

Thanks

It always needs a host but you can use the free SAVIHost to make it standalone.

Savihost will host it, but I am having a lot of problems controlling playback so that Jamstix will stay in sync with a master sequencer. Do you have any instructions for how to set it up?

I'm not quite getting the 'transport' in SaviHost but I don't if we're talking about the same thing?
I started using JS in SaviHost just as something that would load quickly for testing while I've been doing some data migration. Now I've realised that it could also be useful as a quick-loading standalone for practice and general jamming along, or maybe creating the shell of a song arrangement before I start any serious recording. There is a set of transport controls at the top of the UI that seem ideal for this, but are disabled. Anyone know if / how I can use them? At the moment I'm just using 'Start / Stop VST', which means it always runs from the beginning

Dewdman, if you're trying to sync JS with a 'master' sequencer what value is there in hosting it outside that sequencer? Confused
If I want to do anything requiring 'sync' I still open it up inside the master sequencer (cubase in my case...)

No, I don't think its currently possible.

Not all sequencers provide vst hosting. Yes of course the big DAW's do. Some do not. Dome darn nice ones took, like Reason for example. Let's say I am using some other midi sequencer that does not handle vst plugins. That is simple explanation for now.

The more complicated explanation is that I am trying to make Jamstix work on a mac, but in order to do that I need Jamstix to operate as a sync-able standalone on windows somehow. I thought I could do this with EnergyXT but it turns out EnergyXT does not sync to external midi clock. I have also tried VstHost/SaviHost and while I love the the savihost concept for creating a standalone jamstix, it still does not sync to an external sequencer. But I am going to try to work with the author of VstHost to see if I can get him to improve the software for this.

OK - I see where you're coming from.

If you're thinking of getting into developing a solution...

I always thought it would be pretty funky if you could run JS2 via Rewire - I would love to be able to click on a part / bar in JS and have cubase sync up with my selection in JS (the way it does if I move about in the Reason sequencer...)

I know this is probably wildly ambitious and unrealistic, but just in case....
