Is there any way to have the shuffle function operate in a 16th note feel? At present it seems to work only as 8th note shuffle.

Unfortunately in hip hop or R&B or smooth jazz the feel needs to be a 16th note swing or shuffle to sound right....

If not possible now ... maybe in the future? Idea

Ralph, you must be on vacation .... This is the first time I've posted a question and not had a reply within a couple of hours or less Confused

Wait a minute! There's no time off for software developers ... You must have simply missed the post. Sad

Could you send me a MIDI file with what you perceive as 16th shuffle to support@rayzoon.com. I want to make sure we're talking about the exact same thing.

Thanks

I got your sample wav and what you need to do is look at the rhythm as a half-time rhythm at a high BPM. It's just a matter of reference point. Someone asked me a while ago about similar rhythms with the example being 'Rosanna' from Toto. Here is an example on how to do this in Jamstix:

http://www.rayzoon.com/rosanna.fxb

Raise the BPM in your host to about 150BPM or so.

To summarize:

- use shuffle mode
- raise BPM and use half-time rhythms
- check hihat eights and sixteenth and raise sixteenth velocity to max

Hope this helps!

This is a rather awkward work-around, rather than a solution. Using double tempo means the accents and fills will be completely off. Jam mode won't really work at all (since you need two rythms for each bar). The arrangement will be quite difficult to work with as well.

So, any plans to fix this?

Yes, it can be fixed with a 16th shuffle control+logic. We should have this in one of the next betas.

Great! Probably the best thing about Jamstix is that you guys are so incredibly good at responding to user feedback!

Last time I asked for a feature (foot hihat during ride and fills) it took just a few weeks before it was available. Perhaps it will be the same this time... Wink

We should have this next week. What we're doing is adding a second shuffle button. The old one is now called '8th shuffle' and the new one is '16th shuffle'.

Rosanna by Toto is probably the best known 16th shuffle.

The most obvious element of a 16th shuffle is the hihat, which naturally must play in sixteenths for this to work. Listen to Rosanna and memorize the hihat pattern. If you hear it again in another song, chances are it is also a 16th shuffle.

16th shuffling moves notes by a mere 1/12 of a quarter note back. If you have a lone 16th kick you may not notice this much but click the Eighths and Sixteenths button of the hihat and due to the number of notes moved the effect becomes very pronounced.

I'll post a comparison MP3 when I get a chance.

X8-1 beta is now out with 16th shuffle implemented.

Here's 'Rosanna' using this new capability:
http://www.rayzoon.com/Rosanna.rrf

Simply copy to the 'rhythms' folder, load into Jamstix and check '16th' in the jam tab control panel shuffle section.

Please note that X8-1 still sucks at playing accents/fills in 16th shuffle. This will be implemented in the next beta.
