I am sorry Ralph. I love your product, but 2 is just befuddling my simple mind to the point of quitting. We emailed once and you said that I used 1 the way it was meant to be used, which made me feel confident I could master 2, but I just can't.
Maybe I could pay you to come by your studio and get a tutorial, but I just...can't...do it!!! _________________ www.gilbertneal.net

| Stick with it dude. It definitely does have a learning curve, but you will get past it, trust me. There are so many different possible workflows in JS2 you're bound to find one that works for you. |

Ok, so I looked at the tutorial, and the workpath was different and i thinkvery possible. But why am I only hearing high hat? When I click the mouse on the snare i hear it, but when I preview the pattern (using the Rock set as the tutorial did) I dont hear anything but high hate.
If I change sets , same thing,. Some do just hand claps, some do just tambourine, but none give me a set. They work in preview. _________________ www.gilbertneal.net

Check your song power knob above the song sheet and make sure it is at 100% (not all the way up which is 127%).
If it still doesn't work, send me a screenshot. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Dude...I have been in the same boat as you. I started with JS1.... and was really enthused when I got it. I got nowhere fast and got frustrated - I just couldn't wrap my head around the program and pretty much gave up on it.
Then JS2 got released with the promise of new improved features and workflow. I gave it another shot and could instantly see that the program had gotten a lot more user friendly (at least to me)...but I still couldn't get my head completely around it and got a little frustrated.
Then I found the link to this video tutorial for Jamstix in Samplitude:
http://www.samplitude.com/video/tutorials/Samplitude%20and%20Jamstix/Samplitude%20and%20Jamstix.html
Now I don't use Samplitude...but I learned a TON about the work flow of how people really use Jamstix.... and I was able to jump into my DAW and actually get results. That coupled with the new tutorial link posted above (which is an EXCELLENT tutorial by the way) I've come a long way and am now getting results!! I'm no where near fluent in the program yet, but getting there rather quickly.
You HAVE to put a little time into the program for sure - but once you do you will see that the possibilities are endless and that Ralph has created a truly amazing product - Hats off to you Ralph!
Anyway..that's my input..hope it helps you! Now I'll slink off to my dark corner of obscurity.
P.S. - I am certain that the problem you are having is exactly what Ralph mentioned... Turn the knob up! I've been there! |

JS2 is a very flexible tool because it can accomodate very different workflows. Paradoxically the very fact that there is not just a single way to approach the software can be confusing at first glance. IMHO, the first question you should clear is how YOU want to work: would you like to start your own groove from scratch? would you like to use one of provided styles and just tweak it a bit? Do you want to program -say- just the kick and the snare and let JS2 compose the rest for you? Do you want JS2 to "humanize" on old midi file?
According to your anwer, you'll have a slightly different workflow. For istance, most of the times I start a new groove from scratch. Try this procedure:
1)start JS and select "cancel" in the pop-up menu: you'll get an empy song sheet
2) select "jam - no input" up on the right side under the menus.
3) select a kit in the kit menu (for instance select the standard kit in the rock sub-menu)
4) press "kit" again and you are back to the main screen
5) on the right side, write down your own song-sheet. Let's start with the default (just one part -Verse- made of 4 bars reapeated 30 times)
6) Now focus on the bar editor: click on the two curved arrows up on the right side. JS2 starts looping the first (empty) bar.
7) put some one kick hit on the 1st 16th of RF (right foot) row -> selecting "copy" in the pop-up menu you can speed up your work. Now you can drag and drop the first kick you hit wherever you like. If you drag an empty square on a hit, you will delete that hit.
on the LH (left hand) row put some snare hits the same way you did before - adjust the velocity of the single hits if you like
9) put down a pattern for the hi-hats on the RH row. Note that you can adjust velocity and openess of each and every hit.
10) Your basic groove is done: click on the curved green arrown again to stop JS2. On the "bar options" drop-down menu (next to the curved arrows) select turn "groove into a style" (you must have JS2.2 beta 1 installed)
11) Now select a drummer in on the rights side of the screen and you're done. i'd suggest to start with a "solid" drummer like Phil...but this is a matter of taste.
12) Now you can compose new parts in the very same way.
Obviously you can find in the manual in-depth info about each menu and I strongly advice to read it fully.
If you tell us what would you like to achieve, you'll get an answer in this forum. |
