Ok, there's something I'm not getting here. I'll set up the disclaimer's first. First of all, I'm not a drummer. But I've been at midi-ifying drums for long enough to be fairly good and accurate at telling a sequencer what it is that I want to be played. Ok, most of the hi-hats come out as straight 8th notes, but hey...it works.
One of the VERY intriguing things about JS is the idea of it "learning". What I'd like it to be able to do is to take what I've performed (via midi keyboard) and simply tweak it. Not re-write it. I'd like it to humanize/ quantize the performance, and add real drummer to the mix. I guess what I'm saying is that I'd like to "perform" and have JS see this as the core-bars all thru the tune. If JS wants to trick up the hi-hat rhythm, I'm perfectly ok w/ that. I'm fine with it adding a subtle (or in some cases not so subtle) kick or snare accent (in fact, I really like that). But if I put the kick on 1, then I want it to stay on "1". If I play sparsely, I want JS to figure that out.
I've looked thru the manual at this "learn" function, but something seems to be missing. For instance, what mode does "learn" work in? I tried in drum module mode (which makes the most sense to me), and when I play back, I get my performance. If I switch to midi mode, and then select "learn", then I get back what I put in. If I'm in midi mode, and DON'T select "learn", then I get all kinds of snares going off when I've played cymbal rides ONLY.
FWIT, I'm running Reaper on Vista.
Does any of this make sense? |

If you can provide your basic groove as a MID file pattern then use the 'Import' style and load your file. The drummer model will then operate off of your basic pattern.
You can also create your groove in the bar editor and then use 'Turn Bar Into A Style' to transform your groove into a style as above. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

If I play thru the whole tune, will that work as well? I sometimes get kinda anal about where kicks and snares and crashes go, and it's a little easier for me to play it in real time than it is to create 15 different groove patterns or import 15 different mid files.
Thanks for your help. |

Yes, you can do that but the part length must equal the length of your MID file. The maximum part length is 64 bars. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks much for the follow up. So, how does the LEARN function fit in with all of this. I read the manual, but didn't see a mode associated with it. When I use JS as a drum module, and then record the midi data, it only plays exactly what I played. If I switch it to midi, then it doesn't play anything, until I turn the learn function back on, and then it only play what I told recorded previously.
I think I'm missing something. |

The LEARN function is used to record manually played notes in to the bars of Jamstix. It is merely an alternate way for placing the notes manually. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
