I found a song I wrote some years ago using audio drum loops. I now wish to convert the drum track to midi using Toontrack Superior samples.
The rhythm is complex, and I tried to make a midi track to feed JS2. This didn't work out well. Instead I got an excellent rhythm with JS Classic and Roger. That was with the built in JS drums.
When wanting to get a midi for DHF, trouble started. I managed to use Superior subhosted, and it worked, though the "playing" didn't sound as good as with the JS sounds, only the individual "sounds" were better.
Then I tried to let JSs run only midi out. JS2 -> midi track -> DFHS.
That sounded absolutely awful, like the drummer was playing a different song. Same result if I played the recorded midi with DHFS. And I did load the Sonor kit, so it ought to work. I just can't figure out what is wrong.
... Whoops , I forgot. This was in Sonar 7 with JS 2.14 |

For the record I have got the same problem with 2.2 beta 7.
Ralph, please test midi loopback with DFHS. I haven't used Sonar for a couple of years because of a lot of trouble. I think Jamstix was one that didn't work too well too. As I remember I had to use directixer for midi loopback two years ago. Maybe they still have problems with their vst implementation. I also suffer several crashes using DFHS from inside Jamstix.
XP SP2 Intel Q6600, 3GB RAM, Sonar 7.02, JS 2.2 beta 7
If using the internal JS2 drumkits the thing works, and I can also play back the tracks using JS2 as a mere sampler. I have really found a great drum rhythm for this song. I am very impressed with what JS2 can do to sound like this "busy" drummer I am trying to copy with snare ghosts etc. So it's a shame this does not work with Sonar. Maybe I should go back to Cubase, only to be faced with other problems. |

Getting wiser. You cannot use this setup:
JS2 -> midi track -> Any drumsampler
And expect it to play in sync with the music. With the midi loopback already emerging from a soft synth, the chain starts once again when this midi is sent to the next soft synth = drumsampler. Hence Cubase or Sonar would have to make a double adjustment for plugin latency. They don't, probably can't. So this setup can only be used for recording the midi notes. Don't listen at the same time.
In the case of Cubase the drums come too late. In the case of Sonar it goes completely crazy so that event the rythm has gone. Still not sure the recorded track can be used anyway.
So I have to use DFHS from inside JS2 if I want to listen to the DFHS drum sounds while playing. However, this doesn't work either. In Cubase I don't get all the drum kit parts, only some. Looks like there is an upper limit around 300 MB. In Sonar I don't know what happens, it just doesn't work properly again.
Has anybody got this working flawlessly? |
