I have a feeling there are many ways to do what I want to do, and I'd like to know what is the best way, if there is such a thing:

I have created a part (sort of a samba rythm) using the import style - I had imported a midi file that had a bass drum, snare and some high hats. Everything works basically as I thought so far. I'd like to have the song switch to the ride symbol instead of those high hats some times, maybe for several bars at a time. I'm not sure the best way to do this - is it a simple matter of switching drummers? I am currently using the Carter drummer. Do I need to import a new midi file and create a new part that has the ride symbols in them? I note the power knob itself doesn't seem to do what I want. Do I need to add the ride note by note in the bar editor? I am of course trying everything but there is a lot to learn. Thanks.

The best way is to use the 'Power Hand' function of the selected drummer. Simply lower the 'Min Power' of it so the ride kicks in. Also, 'Ride' must be selected as 'Power Hand'.

You can either switch using MIDI automation from your host (right-click on 'Min Power' to map it or you can create a new part for the new section and set the power level there.

THanks Ralph but that doesn't seem to be changing anything - I think I might have missed something simple. In fact I may know what it is but I'm not sure. I see my high hats are not actually being triggered with one of the hands but with the left foot. I guess the midi note that is actually being triggered is "high hat foot close." Am I right that this is the problem? What can I do about it now? Thanks again.

Are you using 'Steve' in a shuffle?

I am actually using Steve at the moment, but I don't think shuffle is activated - that is, both the 8th and 16th buttons in the shuffle area are white, not lit green - although the song does have a bit of a shuffle to it - at least that's how it sounds (probably coming from the fact that the kick drum plays on the 1st and 4th beat). Also, sometimes when I create my own rythms from scratch I get the tempo wrong - that is I'll double it or half it or something, using quarter notes when I should be using 8th, etc - sort of a "spelling" issue - that may have happened here when I recorded the midi file. I don't know if this might be relevant or not.

I'm now trying it with "James Stix" but it still hasn't switched to the ride.

Just in case I haven't made it clear what I'm looking for - the groove i imported has a kick being played by RF and a highhat (actually a "high hat foot close" note) being played by LF - and I'm trying to get Jamstix to play the ride instead of the high hat with some sort of regularity Smile maybe for a bar at a time.

Thanks again.

The 'Power Hand' function only affects hihat notes played by hands, not hihat foot. We're gonna see if we can add limb-based filters to the 'Redirection' logic in the next update so you can send all 'Left Foot' events to 'Ride'. Until then you'll have to hand-edit the core bars to have the ride as needed.
