Hi Ralph.
I finally had a chance to play around with Jamstix this weekend (in depth) and for the first time since I started using Jamstix, I noticed that the MIDI output of Jamstix is not always in sync with its internal sounds. In fact, the internal sounds are perfectly in sync, while the MIDI isn't. I've tried this in both FL Studio 5 & Cubase SX 2.2 (and X3-6) and I have the same problem. Just in case it matters, I'm running XP.
Let me know if you need more info. I don't have anything fancy--just a basic setup where the MIDI output of Jamstix is routed to an external sound module.
Thanks in advance! |

I made a test project in Cubase 2.2 with Jamstix X3-9 and loaded a drum module (sfz) into Jamstix as well as into Cubase and routed the Jamstix MIDI to the sfz. I then let Jamstix play with low latency and the sounds of the two sfz modules were identical to slightly flanging indicating good synchronicity. I repeated this with 100ms latency and it was still the same.
I also did this comparing internal sounds to external sfz and they were tight.
Could you repeat your test with X3-9 and see if you still have problems?
PS: I also checked the MIDI out by recording it into Cubase and it was tight though some notes were slightly late _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks, Ralph.
I actually performed a similar test to the one you mentioned below after I finished my posting. I also found that recording the MIDI directly, (without routing to a sound module) the timing was tight.
Could you try a track with Jamstix as input and a MIDI port connected to something external? I'm beginning to think that this might be a problem with Cubase SX (some sort of MIDI latency).
This is my exact setup:
- three midi tracks
- 1: MIDI IN=None, MIDI OUT=Jamstix; Plays a recorded MIDI
- 2: MIDI IN=Jamsitx, MIDI OUT=External Module (Motif ES connected via Yamaha UX-256) ch 10
- 3: MIDI IN=None, MIDI OUT=External Module (same as 2, but ch 1)
What's interesting is that when all three tracks are playing at the same time, the sync of Jamstix with MIDI out is not tight (even though the internal sound module is--and my cpu load is extremely low). If I disable track 3, the timing seems to be okay. I also began to consider that there *might* be latency problems with my UX-256--although this has never been the case before, even when I bombarded the UX-256 with much more MIDI/sysex data.
I haven't tried X3-9 yet--I will do so tonight. |

I discovered the problem...
I was using the "Emulated" midi ports in Cubase SX--which is the source of all the MIDI latency problems. For some reason, this problem only started appearing when I used Jamstix. However, this is *NOT* a Jamstix issue. What I had to do was copy the IgnorePortFilter (from the MidiPortEnabler directory in SX) up one level and presto! The non-emulated ports appeared. I remapped all of my MIDI ports to use the non-emulated ones and the MIDI timing is tight again.
Thanks for looking into the issue, Ralph. I apologize for sending you in a short, wild goose chase. |

Yeah, the emulated midi ports almost drove me insane a few months back. I recorded a song in perfect sync only to come back another day and find it wasnt playing in sync anymore. Lost a nice song. Had to redo it again. _________________ Musikman

One more note...
the non-emulated MIDI ports should only be used for MIDI OUT. I found that if these are used for MIDI IN, data will not be received through this port. So, in my setup, emulated ports are used for MIDI IN and non-emulated ports are used for MIDI OUT. |
