Hi, I'm just wondering- how would I go about making Jamstix play with a 6/8 feel in 4/4 time?
Also, when editing grooves inside Jamstix, how does one do triplets? |

I always use custom made groove weights for x/8 songs (check the manual and the forum). But this is OK only if the time signature is in eights rather than in 4ths.
About the triplets: in the grid select the cell closer to where the hit should be and the adjust its position with the arrows near to the timing slider (in the same pop-up menu where you choose the kit piece).
For example, say you want a triplet of 1/4 notes in the beginning of the bar:
you have to put three hits on eight 16ths, i.e. the duration of each beat is 2 and two thirds 16ths. Put the first hit in the fist cell; the second one in the third and select +1/24 (i.e. two thirds of one 16th); put the third and last hit on the sixth 16th and adjust the timing by selecting +1/48 (a third of one 16th -> you are already "stealing" the other third from the third cell).
In the very beginning it can be confusing (and this is maybe an area where JS2 should be improved) but after a while it is not a problem any longer.
I hope that helps:) |

| Yes, that helps, but I might just waiting for midi drag & drop from host to Jamstix and set up my basic grooves externally, then let Jamstix take them to town. I usually have very specific ideas of the basic kick and snare groove for any given part of a song, it's programming accent and variation and unique fills that I have more trouble with, and JS excels at all that. |

I get your point. In the beginning it took time to me to get used to JS2 workflow but now I find its internal editor quite good. There is only one feature I am really missing: the possibility of saving (kick and snare) grooves that are 2 or more bars long. I may be wrong, but if you load a midi groove, it can be longer than one bar while there is no possibility of saving a JS2 groove of the same length. |

Hmm,
Ok, here's what I want to be able to do at the moment. I want to import a MIDI groove with just kick and snare. Jamstix then plays with the timing and accent of those notes, but doesn't add or remove any or drastically change their position- again, just the timing and accent. Then Jamstix adds hihats, cymbals, and fills, for which I can tweak the settings. Is there any way to set it up like that? |

I'm just a junior jammer, but if you want the kick and snare left alone with Jamstix doing the rest, just click on the words "kick" and "snare" (where the sliders are) and select disable. Jamstix will leave those alone and take care of the rest.
I'm pretty sure that's what you want. |

Correct, old junior !
Only thing to add is be sure to check "MIDI PLAY IN JAM" in the options and (obviously) feed the MIDI track with kick and snare to JS' input.
That way you're not getting any AI on kick and snare but JS will take care of the rest.
If however you want JS to add some embellishments and human touch to kick and snare, too, you should try the Import style.
Don't forget the option

If enabled, MIDI clips are quantized during import, which is useful if you want to use the
drummer models groove feel instead of whatever feel is programmed in the MIDI clip. |

Another way is to edit kick and snare in the bar editor as needed then save the bar, use the desired style, disable its kick and snare and use the 'Add' submenu in the brain menu to add a 'Groove Importer' to the brain. Set it o JS2 and load your saved groove. Now you get a combo of your hand-edited kick/snare groove and the rest of the selected style.
Here is a demo video of this method:

Thanks guys, now it's doing exactly what I wanted it to. I'm using the Custom Metal style, erasing everything except kick and snare from my midi grooves, adding a groove importer, removing the kick and snare groove modifiers in Jamstix, and letting it set up the hihats and fills. I still have three questions though (edit: four):
1. When I import a midi groove with triplets in it, say 8th triplets, it seems they get quantized to 16th notes. 16th triplets get quantized to 32nd notes. And, as El Taube said, it is a pain to manually program triplets in the bar editor. The particular groove I'm trying to import is already quantized, I never programmed any timing variations in it, can I prevent Jamstix from quantizing this groove entirely on import, or even better import the groove and quantize it, but with 32nd-triplet resolution?
2. How do I make it do half-note hats in the custom metal style, or even any other style? Heavy hats are on 4ths.
3. Can I set it up to automatically play a cymbal at the beginning of a part, or do I have to program that cymbal crash in?
4. How do I change the power for a part without changing the power of the whole song? |

The MIDI import has a hard time with triplets right now. We have this on the list of planned improvements. Work-around is to import your midi groove via the part menu, take one bar of it and edit the triplets for that one bar so everything is as it should be, save the bar and now use the groove importer as before but with the JS2 Groove instead of the MID groove.

That's quite unusual so you'll have to hand-edit that.

If 'End Crash' is checked in the fill before the part change then you will get that crash (if the limb logic allows it).

the whole song? |
Use a automation envelope on 'Song Power' in the host and shape the envelope as needed. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Gah, it's kind of a pain to edit triplets in the bar arranger, though. I thought I heard some mention at some point of an ability to turn off quantizing of imported midis, is that possible? |

Yes, it is in the 'Options' screen under 'Quantize MIDI Import'. It will still have to fit it into the JS2 timing model though and that's not working 100% yet for notes way outside the 16th grid. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
