Hi,
some people claim that the high-end libs like DFHS, BFD and AD etc. deliver a better sound quality than the kits available from Jamstix. I would really like to know if this is true. Maybe some of the owners of these libs could provide some A/B examples of the same performance with the Jamstix Kits and those high-end libs. But please be fair: try to match the sound with Jamstix, make use ambiance control and use the XL content.
I am curious to hear the results
thanks, drjee |

Really, with DFHS and BFD it's about having dry samples with all the different mic controls and ambiance and such. When you use those, it is a much larger learning curve since you have to figure out good EQ and Comp settings and such.
I used DFHS for about 2 years. I recently sold it because of my involvement with Rayzoon and being able to sample my Gretsch Renown Maple for the future Metal Pack.
I sampled my kit the same way I record it when I play it live so it is a very high quality sample pack with multiple velocity layers. One things DFHS does have is the mic bleed option which is alright, but over the years I really didn't use it too much, just the overheads and room mics for all the drums to give them that live sound.
This is something I did when I sampled my kit. I made sure each drum got picked up from the overheads, it's close mic, and the room mic.
I also have the XL pack for JS, and think it is great too. Mainly though, I sold off DFHS because know I have samples of my drums which were sampled similer to the way DFHS is, just without alot of the extra things like complete mic bleed(which I never found too usefull). _________________ Straight Jacket Sunday, Multiple Personality Disorder coming soon... |

Well, I can't wait to hear that Metal Pack...
I guess one other big difference there is in between Jamstix and DFHS or BFD will be the number of sample taken to do the patch, but I believe Jamstix has enough as is, anyway for my needs...
Is there a limit in the number of velocity samples you can use in Jamstix?
What is the average right now? |

I should add that most sounds have 2 alternate hits so that a five layer sound has actually 15 samples. We've found that alternate hits are more important than increasing velocity layers because drums (especially metal-style) tend to operate on a fairly constant , high-dynamic level and the alternate hits keep things varied and also avoid the machine-gun effect. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
