Hi all,
Anybody have a MIDI of a rhumba groove that's mainly played on a normal drumkit, with a bit of added percussion ?
Would love to hear what JS can do with something like that. Cool
All I've found so far are rhumba grooves for latin percussion, which is fine, but not exactly what I'm searching for.
I'm looking for a feel along the lines of mid-era Peter Green (In The Skies, Slabo Day) perhaps, need not be exact, but should have that cool, laid back, rolling feel.
There are more, mostly vintage songs using that feel, but even more obscure ... Shocked
You can listen to the examples here:

Any help very much appreciated,
Rhino

Hi Prof
The samples are a bit short to really get the feel but would it be something like a slowed down version of The Allmans "Jessica"? You could create a groove with beat 2 on the snare then 4 and 4.2 on the Toms with 8ths on the hats (or ride bell). Kick on 1 and 3.2. (doing it in my head so I hope I've got it right?)
We used to do it this way.

You could add claves or cowbell on the beat or syncopated to funk it up

Sorry if I'm way off.

Hi Mack,
thanks for the interesting suggestions !
Kinda hard to judge the Jessica thing for me atm, it's such a busy track.
Have to look, I probably have a decent MIDI of that one somewhere.
Anyways, it was fun to listen to that beautiful tune again, especially Chuck Leavell's piano solo is incredible... Smile
I'll try your rhythmic suggestion tonight, definitely worth a try !
Cheers,
Rhino

Hi Mack,
this definitely got me going !
Great suggestion and absolutely to the point, thank you !
Your pattern already was very close to what I heard in my head but couldn't quite pin down.
I added a few notes, namely another hihat on 1.4 (essential for the vague picture in my mind), and now I'm almost there.
The rest is about getting the velocities right (extremely important) and programming some slight variations on that beat.
Who knows, I might even transfer some kit pieces to percussion ?
Then I'll set up a little contest between our virtual drummer friends to see who's got the right feel for this groove. Cool
Actually it's a lot more fun this way than simply loading a MIDI.
Thanks again for taking the time and for your great idea !
Cheers,
Rhino

As soon as I've got the rhythm to the point where it gives nice results with JS's import style I'll pm you for a mail addy and send you the MIDI so you can experiment with it yourself.
Looks like a rather versatile little groove, good for several styles imho.
Might take me till next week though, I'm up to my nose in work atm, this one is just for fun. Smile
Cheers,

Hi Prof
Look forward to it.
Just occured to me that this groove should suit a rockier version of Pete Green's "Rollin' Man" if you know it (Album - "Mr. Wonderful").
Can't better the original but I might have a go just for fun. Funny how one thing leads to another!
