I don't have a VSTi drum synthesizer. I own Akai S5000.
I'm going to let Jamstix to play with its own samples and capture Jamstix's MIDI output on Sonar's MIDI track.
Then I'll route captured MIDI track to S5000 loaded with my own kit.
Will it work as I descibed? Rolling Eyes
Thanks.

Yes, it will work. You should do it like this:

  • make sure you are using DirectiXer 2.5
  • in Jamstix click the 'MIDI-Out Only' box in the mapping tab (not needed but frees up memory)
  • check the 'Send MIDI...' button on top of the Jamstix GUI in the DirectiXer controls so Jamstix's MIDI Out gets routed into Sonar.
  • add a MIDI track and set its input to DirectiXer and its output to the MIDI port your Akai is on. Enable Input Echo on the track.

Jamstix should now drive the Akai in real-time. If the Akai doesn't have GM mapping, you may have to adjust the key assignment in the Akai or in the Jamstix mapping page.

Note that in the Jamstix demo this will work only for bars 1-4. The full version does not have this limitation

Hey, that was quick Surprised . I'm reluctant to pay $50 before I even installed Jamstix. As Ralph said earlier

Cakewalk VST will work right out of the box but the tooltips in Jamstix will flash too quickly to be read.

1. Will it work with Sonar's (3.1.1) VST adapter?
2. I understand it's better to download and try. Is it easy to uninstall?
Thanks

Jamstix will work with it but you won't be able to route the MIDI Out to the Akai because CW VST doesn't offer VSTi MIDI-Out

The Jamstix demo can be uninstalled through the Control Panel. No problem.

Sorry for being so stupid Embarassed .
I don't need real-time routing to Akai. I'll do that after I recorded MIDI data from Jamstix.
Will I be able to record Jamstix's MIDI Out to Sonar's MIDI track with CW adapter? That's all I need.

Nope, CW VST does not support that.

You can export an arrangement to a MIDI file in Jamstix and then import it in Sonar.

Note that the demo is limited to bars 1 -4 on the export as well.

Thanks, I got it. I'll stick with this cumbersome way for now.
Downloading!
Good luck with the product!
