This is a jam I threw together to get my new G&L Legacy recorded. It was a rushed project ... Wink

Launch The Legacy Jam

G&L Legacy > Mesa Boogie (Left)
Yamaha SA2000 > Mesa Boogie (right)
M-Audio keyboard and VSTi Organ Program (1st time I've used ... can't play keyboards)
Yamaha Bass > Bassman amp
Jamstix drum arrangement (just put together today)

Nice song ma man... ! love that guitar sound. I used to have a G &L signature one, and sold it, i regret it though. but I ended up getting a fender strat after that so I am still happy thank God.

By the way, how do you go about recording something like that, what drumkit did you use? default? Did you use the arrangement section a lot? I am still trying to understand how to use that. Like Ralph said, it does take some time and effort, but so far I have not been able to get it to do just what I really want. So I have been using pre made midi patterns to run JS, but I still dont give up since it really is an awsome program..

Thanks in advance.

I put an 85 BPM click track in the program. I used the default drums on this one ... really because I forgot about it.

Then I chose a few keywords and got about a dozen styles. I listened to each in Arranger (by clicking on them) and deleted the ones that I didn't like until I got down to three. Then I laid out 8, 4 and two bar measures that made sense with what I was trying to do in Arranger. Then I let the Jamstix program do it's thing but I didn't like it exactly. But I went ahead and added the bass part.

I changed some of the settings ... like pocket on snare and made it a bit more complex & funky ... but not too much. I cleared all of the decisions and changed the fills to every 4 bars instead of 8. Also inserted 4 bars of intro stuff and added and ending. Then I let the Jamstix go again.

Pretty close now. But I changed the first two bars of the 4 bar breaks to one of the other three styles which made it feel like it was building ... which matched what I was doing with the bass part. Then I converted the Jamstix part into a soundfile by itself (locking it) and muted the Jamstix track.

Then I added the two guitar parts ... each in one pass. I should have spent more time ... there were mistakes. Then I laid in the keyboards last.

It's all still a bit foreign to me ... but I think it's way easier than MIDI and it sounds pretty natural.

Good luck. Very Happy

Ken,

That's a beautiful guitar and a nice tone. There's something about jamstix that makes one want to just keep noodling on! I have a similar sort of effort up at:

http://www.dslextreme.com/users/jredlund/music/slowjam.mp3

However, nothing about my track is real except for the guitar, which is a circa 1986 G&L ASAT that I just had refretted. It's going through a Korg Toneworks modeler. The Rhodes is Mr. Ray, the bass is a Manytone soundset in Wusikstation. Jamstix is just doing its thing, with minimal editing except for the ending.

Your track is way better though. I like what you get out of Jamstix.

John

I too think it's worth learning ... looking forward to version 2 ... I think it's supposed to be simpler.

I've been using MIDI and that's just HARD and it doesn't sound like a real drummer ...

Got that right. Midi is ok if youre pretty good at hitting the keys of the keyboard. But for me, i am not that good. I know how to play the drums, well, kind of, but I can say I can play decently at least my songs. But its hard to translate that into reality with out having some real drums playing them live. I hope JS2 is easier or at least it has some kind of wizard to help things, like if one wants to build say the first part of a song then take it from there and build it piece by piece.

Good stuff Doveman - bass and drums working well together. The organ did enough to support the guitar improvisations. Liked it a lot. Very Happy
