Here's the setup: Cubase LE, Korg Pad Kontrol (with DFH), and Jamstix
Forgive me, as this is all new to me. What I wish to do is basically create rhythm loops and string them together into a song (using DFH sounds), which seems simple enough. However, I am hoping to work a certain way, and I'm unsure as to whether Jamstix will agree with me.
Let's start by saying that I want to program a verse. I would like to tap out a kick/snare pattern (to a click) on the Pad Kontrol and have Jamstix essentially recognize it and loop it. Then, I would like to tap out the hi-hat part, and Jamstix would loop that. You get the picture...basically layering until it's a full beat. Then I would like to name it (verse) and save it.
Then I would move onto the chorus...same layering drill...name and save.
Then I would like to arrange the parts together to make a full song.
Then I would like to make this full drum song into an actual track (or tracks?) in Cubase.
Is this the sort of thing that I can do with Jamstix? Feel free to be as simplified or as detailed as you have the patience for. Thanks!

You don't really need Jamstix for that workflow. You can do it straight with Cubase. However, using Jamstix would give you the humanization that you would otherwise have to painstakingly edit manually in Cubase.
Here is how you would do this in Jamstix and you can do it with the demo version to check it out:
- load Jamstix into Cubase
- make sure your keyboard is routed to Jamstix via a MIDI track
- switch to 'Manual Jam' and set fill frequency to 0.
- go to the rhythm tab and hit the 'Learn' button
- start playing your kick/snare and hihat patterns sequentially. Jamstix will add them together as you go.
Now, Jamstix is rule-based so it will not play exactly what you are playing, it will try to fit your playing into its paradigms.
- hand-edit if needed in the rhythm tab until the groove is right
- go to the arranger and select the next rhythm slot
- repeat 'learning' until all your rhythms are done
- go to the arranger and click the desired rhythm changes for the song and add fills as needed (right-click on cell)
- if desired you can export to whole arrangement to MID file or record the Jamstix MIDI output in Cubase as it plays (note that the demo version is limited in MIDI export/output to bars 1 through 4)
Let me know if I can help any further. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
