|
|
| Okay, I think this is a really great product, but I'm really having a hard time grasping Jam with Midi. The only midi in function I seem to be getting to work is when using Jamstix as just a plain old insturment. Jam with Audio works fine, but I hear everyone talk the greatness of Jam with Midi. I've tried it in Tracktion and FL studio and I just can't seem to get it right. Normally things like this I can figure out, but this one is beyond me. Any ideas? |

Send me a screenshot of your Tracktion with Jamstix open and on jam tab during a MIDI jam to support@rayzoon.com.
Make sure to capture the whole screen. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Just looked at your screenshot and you put Jamstix behind Wusikstation in the same track. In Tracktion this means that Wusikstation will "eat" all MIDI input and Jamstix gets nothing (except for possible MIDI out from Wusikstation). Remove Wusikstation and the jam will work.
Of course this raises the question how do you get the MIDI-in to Jamstix and Wusikstation at the same time. This is easy in Cubase and Sonar but I'm not sure about Tracktion and FL Studio.
Anyone know more about those hosts and can help? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I'm thinking in Tracktion you may have to do it with a rack. I tried it and it seems to work on my laptop, but I'm just using a simple app that lets me use the laptops 'keyboard' as a midi controller. I'll have to try it more when I'm at home. So, basicly you're saying that both the synth VSTi (wusikstation in this instance) and Jamstix needs to receive the incoming midi data at the same time? That makes sense. In Tracktion, if I put Jamstix in front of Wusikstation on the same track, Jamstix doesn't seem to be passing along the data from the midi controller. It just seems to pass through the drum pattern data. Any ideas on that one?
I still haven't figured things out in FL studio, but I'll have to play with it more I guess. |

Yes, that is correct.

VSTi generally do not do MIDI-thru (meaning passing MIDI-in to their MIDI-out). Jamstix cannot do it because its MIDI-out is supposed to be its drum sounds so that you can route them to an external drum module.
For instance, you can drop BFD behind Jamstix in a Tracktion track and BFD will start to play the Jamstix beat. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ok, things are starting to make sense now that I understand the routing a bit more. I was able to get FL Studio working, but ONLY coupled with Energy XT. I've not really used Sonar or Cubase really. I'm guessing they make it easier to route midi data in those programs? If so, you may want to look into a solution for routing the midi data through Jamstix somehow to make the plugin more universal to other programs that don't have complex midi routing capability. Things like Energy XT is a work around, but not everyone has that. |

That's actually the reason why things like energyXT, Chainer and other sub-hosts exist.
We may be able to route MIDI-In to a dedicated Jamstix MIDI-Out channel and if you can specify the input channel in your synth VSTi it would work. We'll look into that. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

For example with Tracktion. If you put Jamstix first and have two sets of midi outs on your plugin. One set is for other drum VSTis like you have now, and another is just a pass through from the midi controller. I'm not sure if that would be more difficult than your suggestion, but it's an idea. |

There is no need to use Energy XT or anything else to route midi to Jamstix in Tracktion. But you do need to use Rack filters, unless the vsti will pass midi through, if not, set it up in parallel with Jamstix, in a rack filter similar to this
www.chico.co.uk/jamstix.jpg
As you can see here, the midi in from this track gets routed to the midi in of Jamstix, and another vsti. So you hear the sound of that vsti, and Jamstix responds to the midi input triggering that sound (admittedly the vsti could be a better choice than another drum module, but hey, do your own screen shots, i'm just trying to help - i didn't have any other vsts on my internet facing pc)

Thanks, Chico, I should have known that! I don't use Tracktion personally but did try out the racks a few weeks ago and just forgot about them.
Between Live, Tracktion, Orion and FL Studio it gets easy to forget what does what...
Thanks again! _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Or for even simpler routing try this:
Make a rack which just joins the midi input to the midi output.
Now drag a copy onto any tracks where you want the same midi signal...
