I'm using Jamstix 1.71 with BFD(YEAH) and Sonar VI PE!

I'm having a repeated issue with accent cymbal crashes when I come out of a fill. Now, I've taken some advice and opened the actual fills in notepad, but to my surprise, they all are supposed to end with a cymbal crash. I seemed to be getting them to end with a tom1 accent hit!!

Anyone know why this might still be happening. Ralph?!

My immediate gut reaction is that one or more crash cymbals are mapped to a tom sound in BFD in your setup. Are you using BFD inside of JS?

No, BFD is not embedded, it's open seperate and linked throug the appropriate midi in/out in Sonar VI.

It almost sounds like it might linked. I use BFD "ALL" with JAmstix. I don't have any toms linked with cymbals or vice versa. An example of this in action is on my "did I promise" track linked in "general". You can here on the very last drum hit is tom#1, when it should be a crash according to the programming on the fill. I turned down the funkiness and complexity, as well as turned off any accents. Is there anything in percussion habits I should tweak!

I worked with another users Jamstix midi data (thread about the Andy Johns/BFD) and his jamstix data had the same thing. It's not just BFD either, because the sound sample that he sent me(audible on that thread) had tom accents in place of cymbal crashes. He wasn't using BFD when he made that. I took his exported midi data and dropped that in my BFD midi channel to come up with my two sound samples of his work. So it seems it's probably something that many people don't realize is happening. It just sounds so odd to come out of a fill and have that first crash on the next measure played as a high tom.

Can you send me the following:

a) A FXB file of the Jamstix state when it does this. Use 'Save Bank' in the host to get this file

b) A MID file example and tell me the bar # when it happens.

Please send all to support[at]rayzoon.com. Thanks!

Okay, here's the key mapping you are using in the song:

Kick #36 C1
Snare #38 D1
Snare Bounce #39 D#1
Snare Sidestick #37 C#1
HiHat Closed #42 F#1
HiHat Foot #44 G#1
HiHat Open #46 Bb1
HiHat Half-Open #50 D2
Ride #51 D#2
Ride Bell #51 D#2
Crash A #49 C#2
Crash B #47 B1
Splash A #49 C#2
Splash B #50 D2
China A #55 G2
Tom 1 #47 B1
Tom 2 #47 B1
Tom 3 #45 A1
Tom 4 #43 G1
Tom 5 #43 G1
Tambourine #40 E1
Cowbell #41 F1
China B #55 G2
Drumsticks #65 F3
Chimes (Fast) #40 E1
Tom 1 Bounce #47 B1
Tom 2 Bounce #47 B1
Tom 3 Bounce #45 A1
Tom 4 Bounce #43 G1
Tom 5 Bounce #46 Bb1
Egg Shaker #0 --
Shaker #0 --
Jam Block Hi #0 --
Jam Block Lo #0 --
Chimes (Slow) #0 --
Snare Brush Muted #0 --
Snare Brushing #0 --
Snare Rimshot #0 --

You can get this by clicking on the word 'Mapping' in the mapping (requires Jamstix 1.71).

As you can see, the key 'B1' is mapped to the following:

Crash B #47 B1
Tom 1 #47 B1

This is the problem. Make sure that they don't use the same key and all will be fine.

WOW- good eyes.

Sorry, I'm sort of a midi newb, but let's break this down further.
The keymapping is provided by jamstix, no? Is that the output configuration that I select in Jamstix. For example, I choose BFD- ALL, and doesn't that configure the key mapping based on that template? Would I have to adjust this each time I open Jamstix? To confirm, the mapping adjustments are done in Jamstix, right?

You're right, this is mapped this way in the 'BFD All' mapping. I will check this out further and provide you new mappings that fix the problem later today.

Thanks!

Thanks Ralph!
I was thinking on this. Would it be possible then to incorporate a BFD mapping that accurately supports both kits? For example, you have kit 1 and kit 2 in BFD. If I wanted to load up kit 2 with additional toms and cymbals, would it be possible to tweak the BFD ALL mapping to support that?

You have two crashes, two splashes, and ride and china with the mapping you displayed above. Would it be possible that I can map cymbals from kit 1 and kit 2? Sorry if that's a dumb question. I'm hoping we can have 6 cymbals set up on the kit, as opposed to the 3 I have active now. What about toms. Since you can technically route 6 toms in BFD (kit 1/kit2), would it be possible to route 5 within Jamstix?

Ralph, I went ahead and made my own keymap for the BFDALL. I actually included provisions for KIT2 within BFD, which is really cool. I can finally take advantage of the tom space and cymbals.

for example, I have made I added 2 toms to from kit 2 to complete the 5 tom setup. I took tom 1 from BFD kit 2 and made it Jamstix Tom 1, I then used toms 1-2-3 in BFD kit1 as Jamstix Toms 2-3-4, and then I added tom #3 from BFD kit 2 as Jamstix tom 5, which is really cool
I can open a 3 tom kit into bfd, open the same tom kit onto BFD kit 2, and just turn the pitch up on those toms (down on the floor tom) and whammo, we have a 5 tom kit using BFD all. It works great for the cymbals as well. In the previous BFD All jamstix routing, crash A and B would play the same things as splash A and B. With a little rerouting of the keys, I know have spashes from BFD Kit#2 triggered to play when slash A and slash B are used within Jamstix. I added the china as well, which rounds out the complete 6 cymbal set.

So far, it's working great. No more tom 1 hits on the transitionary fills, and I have 5 toms and 6 cymbals.

I wanted to know if Jamstix actually makes use of those other cymbal hits and toms within it's prepacked grooves and fills. Would you know the answer to that?

Yes, it will.

I'm working on new BFD mappings as well with 5 toms and 6 cymbals.

Fixed BFD mappings that also use the new BFD 1.5 options are now available here:
