As a new user, I'm interested in the different ways people use Jamstick to create their rhythms for songs.
For example, if you have an existing song with midi files, how do you go about tweaking Jamstix to get a good track? Do you route , say a guitar to Jamstix, set it on Keyword jam, pick a few rythms that fit your piece, and let Jamstix rip.
Or do you set up a simple rythmn pattern in manual mode, then let Jamstix improvise while you play..
I'm just curious how others approach this software and would like to get some tips. Obviously Ralph is the master and will hopefully come out with some tutorials.
Thanks,

I've just been using the arranger and selecting rhythms from there and then choosing which bars I want fills/intro/endings
That way it plays back the same patterns each time.
The free and keyword jam are a bit more hit and miss as to whether the pattern will fit the song. Also they play back differently each pass but the manual jam with the arranger plays back the same patterns each time.

I'm actually not the master because Jamstix is designed to be used in any number of ways, some I may not even know, yet
Personally, I use the jam modes to develop song ideas. It really makes a huge difference compared to playing on the instrument only ( I use keyb, guitar or bass). I especially like to be able to probe the dynamics of the song idea. This usually leads to a decent concept in my mind. I may save several of the patterns Jamstix came up with and hand-edit some a bit. Once I'm ready to compose the final product in the sequencer, I do not jam but arrange the rhythms I decided to use by hand in the arranger. Finally I use a lot of MIDI automation, such as Velocity and Reduction envelopes to define the dynamics and customize playing style. And of course, intro, fills and ending: hand-placed and choice-select.
But again, there are many different ways... _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Actually I dont´t exactly know how I use or will use Jamstix because there are many so many useful ways.
1. The Freejam is very inspiring in itself, so if I don´t know the direction of a song, this might be a way to go.
2. I am finding A LOT of the pre- defined rhythms (rhythms folder, keyword jam) very inspiring and extremely well thought out. As I go along I plan to audition them, categorize them to my needs and tweak them a bit, too, in order to have more variation, though Jamstix is so good it never gets boring just playing one rhythm. This wish for creating variations of pre- defined rhythms might come from the old days, when I had to program 10 variations of a rhythm in my drum machine to prevent a drum track from getting boring and repititive.
BTW Ralph, it would be useful to have newly created subfolders of the rhythms folder displayed in keyword jam. I could create customized folders for special needs for example.
3. When I have something inspiring I might choose to work on it in the arranger or simply do some editing in my host (Cubase SX 3 that is). |

Doc, when you go through the library rhythms, feel free to add key words to the rhythms to help you categorize. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

| Yeah I know ´bout the keywords, and it IS already useful, but what about subfolders? |

Ah, I see you´re not convinced!
See, Jamstix comes with already 257 rhythms. If I decide to work like I described above (variations and such) and if we come to a situation where users will share Jamstix- programmed or - generated rhythms or grooves the number of rhythms will be by far more than 1000 and growing.
It simply would be easier to handle it by having subfolders, e.g. a subfolder named "downloaded Zauni´s favourite soul grooves"....
You get the picture...

Right now, I'm just using the arranger. I am trying to get in touch with velocities and layers for the right type of sound. I'm getting closer.
Sometimes I use the freejam........but it's a long learning process for me.....I have a tendency to really get "inside" of things and learn all the nobs/switches etc. ......Plus I sold my house, and been accepted on a new one and that is taking up all my really free time. |
