I'm trying to use the start/stop key function in Jamstix in a project in Reaper, however as I don't have any hardware Midi inputs on my laptop, I thought I'd use the "Virtual Midi Keyboard" to issue the start/stop key to JamStix, but just can't get it to work...

Does anyone know what I need to do to get this up and running?

(btw, a big thanks Ralph for pointing me in the direction of Reaper in response to my previous query, it's extremely good)

Cheers,

Baldy. Wink

I thought I'd add a bit more info....
I'm actually trying to get Jamstix to free jam to audio but don't want it to start until about bar 6. I've tried setting the "start at bar" option on the arrangement tab but in free jam mode jamstix always starts at bar 1, so, I thought I'd use the "start/stop" key option to start jamstix, BUT, I have no midi input on my soundcard, so am trying to use the "Virtual Midi Keyboard" in Reaper to send the start/stop key to jamstix.

Is there something I need to do in jamstix to get it to use/see the virtual midi keyboard key presses? I know the virtual midi keyboard is working in Reaper - I recorded my bass guitar track using it (and a Bass Guitar VSTi). I'm not sure why, but jamstix is just ignoring the virtual keyboard.

Any ideas guys?

Cheers

I tried this, and it works, but something isn't mapped right - try using the little keyboard button on the Manual Jam tab in Jamstix to record the last played MIDI note. I click "C4" in Reaper and it reads it as "C2" in JS.

Once that's straightened out, it seems to obey the keyboard.

Of course, make sure the track is selected, and using the Virtual MIDI keyboard for the input.

Doesn;t seem to work at all for me. I've set the input to the Jamstix track to the virtual midi keyboard (to listen to all channels) and Jamstix just ignores any keys I click on (or press the corresponding key on my laptop keyboard) although I know the virtual keyboard works in Reaper, as I used it to play my bass guitar part in to my project. I've obvoiusly got something wrong with my setup if it's working for you BoS.

What version of Reaper are you running? Make sure you are on the "Manual Jam" tab, hit the Reaper virtual MIDI keyboard key and then the Jamstix little wee keyboard button next to the note name combo box. It should track.

Hi BoS,
Thanks for replying.
Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong, I'm trying to use the start stop in Free Jam mode...
I'll try it in manual jam later and let you know how I get on,
My version of Reaper is (currently) 1.887 (I keep pretty up-to-date with Reaper).

Cheers.

Nope, still no joy on this one.... I've even tried on a different machine with the same results.
I have tried using the virtual midi keyboard supplied with "Magix Midi Studio 2005" with jamstix as an audio instrument in a project in that software, and it works fine.... Not sure whether this is a JamStix or Reaper problem.

Oh, I've just installed JS2 on my machine and I can't even find the "start/stop" key assignment in there......
