hi.

i'm gonna buy a new system in a the new year and am researching now. right now i'm getting pops and clicks just with Cubase and Jamstix with the buffers set low so, obviously i'd like to eliminate that in the future.

this was recommended from another forum:

"Intel D975XBX Motherboad $298.68
Is the top of the line motherboard manufactured buy intel, of almost all the boards out there it has the least reported issues with the new intel processors. However, it does lack on over clocking features, and only has two PCI Slots, It instead includes 3x PCI E slots

Antec P150 includes 430watt NEO HE Power Supply 120mm Exhaustfan
Antecs P150 is a good value for the money. The Performance line is designed for silence making it a good DAW Case, it also comes with 430watt NEO HE. Antecs PSU's are considered some of the best in the industry. The draw back is these cases are quite heavy.

NVIDIA E6600LE from evga $120
I picked this card even though its on the expensive side for a lowend video card, because its passiveley cooled and doesn't use turbo cache which steals your memory from your laptop.

Crucial Rendition 2x1GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 240PIN DIMM Memory 280.60 (2GB Total) Or Corsair Value
I picked this memory, just because crucial has a good reputation as ram vendor, and offers quality ram from micron.

Zalman FB123 92MM Fans x2 $17.34
These Fans are near silent, and work as intake fans for the Antec P150
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM 96$
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHZ $240.80
This is 2mb Cache version of the Conroe intels flag ship dual core
for the consumer market. The Imacs use Memroms which are designed for laptops, they have lower bus speeds, which probably hit the I macs peformance by 10-12% compared to this chip so i've paired the Imac comparison with 2.16ghz Chip instead. Despite only having 2mb Cache htis is less than a 4% performance hit in comparison to a 4mb cache at the same speed.
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 3GB/S 7200RPM 16MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive x2 (640gb total)
These are fastest hard drives in their class however, they run fairly hot, so make sure you use intake fans."

i'm almost hardware illiterate. does Jamstix as software require any recommended specs that i should be aware of ?

i'll be running Cubase SX, Jamstix, Sonic Synth 2, Wizooverb 2, Amplitube. my music is progressive metal, so several guitar tracks, bass, one or two vocal tracks and maybe a synth track. and Jamstix of course.

any hardware gurus here that can offer any insight? i figure to buy Jan-Feb.

thanks.

My advice is: if possible get rid of Cubase...

I'm using Reaper which is (almost) free and 20x more stable and effective as Cubase ever will be.

Heaven knows, I'm no fan of CuBase, but that's a pretty sweeping statement Shocked . CuBase is one of the longest established of the heavyweight sequencers and there's very little you can't do with it.

Considering just how many CuBase users there are out there (including not a few professionals) any problems with stability would have caused a riot by now.

I'm not knocking Reaper - I know very little about it, although I do have a copy sitting here awaiting evaluation - but I can't believe that CuBase can be so poor by comparison.

I have been using Cubase from day one, never ever had any problems.
I have been using Jamstix with Cubase for some time, never any problems.
you just need a clean system, with a reasonable soundcard with good drivers, all set up correctly.

I gotta say here... Cubase is my Host. Are you insisting that the pops and clicks are because he is using Cubase? Thats just rediculous... Pops and clicks are generally caused from lack of bandwith with USB soundcards or inadequate buffer settings... Or just bad sound cards.

One thing I've noticed, people just jump on this Reaper band wagon... Especially people from the KVR forum. I've tried other hosts and I keep coming back home to Cubase.

That aside, that should be a fine system. I'm running a E6400 overclocked to 3.2Ghz on stock voltage and it is a sweet chip. Even without the overclock, the Core 2 Duos are a serious chip. The 2GB should be fine for RAM... The only times I run into issues is some of the samples with Colossus, since they are huge... Probably need 4GB to even open some of them. I will say this, you are going to be happy with a Core 2 Duo system, I am with mine.

Having made the post above, I thought I should have a look at Reaper. So far, I installed without any problems, but have failed to make it work with my control surface (Yamaha 01x). It doesn't recognise transport commands at all - not a very promising start.

Reaper is popular for one very good reason - it's cheap and if you can make it work, appears to offer pretty good value for money. I don't have a problem with that (even the 'not working for me' bit, not everyone has the same gear).

I do have a problem when someone starts bad-mouthing an application that has been around since the year dot, is probably one of the most widely used in the world, frequently cited as a benchmark for comparison with its peers and has been ported to so many platforms.

... and, for the record, I personally don't even like CuBase Smile .
