|
|
Hi - I see reference to 3/4 rhythms in the 1.6 User's manual (Percussion, page 21, for example), but I can't find anything but 6/8 when I hit the Rhythm Tab then Load button.
Am I looking in the wrong place?
Thanks _________________ Alexis

There are no 3/4 rhythms in the library because they are so rare in modern music. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks Ralph.
Can I put in a request for a 3/4 somewhere along the line? Lots of 60s music, and country music with 3/4.
Thanks for all you do for us _________________ Alexis

The thing is that most 3/4 rhythms either sound the same or are really 6/8.
I guess I can't hide the fact that I really don't like 3/4 at all...
Can anyone think of a good 3/4 song ( truly 3/4, not 6/8 )? _________________ Ralph Zeuner

It's not just doing a whole song in 3/4, but putting a break of a few measures of 3/4 in the middle of 4/4 songs often works nicely.
In terms of a specific really good song, just off the top of my head, I'm thinking of the Beatles "You've got to Hide Your Love Away". I'm pretty sure there are some monster rock hits in 3/4, if no one else can name them, I'll think a bit more.
Country music also has a lot of 3/4 tunes. I sometimes feel that nowadays country is the most direct offspring to the guitars/bass/drum/vocals and harmonies that one can tune in on the radio, and the studio musicians are generally awesomely skillful. Funky thing for a New Yorker to say, but hey, weirder things have happened.

OK, Ralph, here's a start, some great rock songs with 3/4 meter:
1) Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
2) Manic Depression - Hendrix
3) Money (Pink Floyd, varies w/ 4/4 time)
4) Steely Dan?
5) All You Need is Love (varies w/ 4/4 time)
6) Queen - We are the Champions
7) Kashmir (Led Zeppelin)
Whipping Post (Allman Brothers)
It is harder to think of good 3/4 songs than I thought it would be. But still, this IS a list of pretty cool songs _________________ Alexis

The chorus at least is 4/4 (can't hear the verse in my head right now)

The chorus at least is 4/4 (can't hear the verse in my head right now) | "Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees..." The verse is 3/4. This is one of those songs that mixes 3/4 and 4/4 I was talking about that sounds really good.

Sorry but that is a 7/8. | I guess I hear it as another 4/4 alternating with 3/4 song...

It's a 6/8 | I'm wondering if this is this one of those "You say potatAYto I say potAHto" kind of things... I admit I don't really know how to distinguish between 3/4 and 6/8. I think that if you just half the tempo, you can change from one to the other, so maybe they can be considered the same. Maybe the only time they would be different is if there were a rhythm that took 2 measures to develop, instead of 1.

It's a 4/4 | Percussion is 4/4, but listen to the instruments - do you hear them doing 3/4?
And don't forget about the killer rock blues by the Allman Bros in 3/4 - Whipping Post!
And Manic Depression
Anyway, thanks for even considering putting a 3/4 in some future version. See, I'VE got a great song I want to put drums to, but it's 3/4! (At least I think it is great, someone has to!). I'll try some 6/8 action on it and see how it goes.
Thanks, Zauni _________________ Alexis

You're right. That verse is clearly 3/4.

3/4 and 6/8 gets convoluted because they are the same but at different speeds. That's why many drummers say things like 'playing sixes', indicating that they are playing a pattern that repeats over six counts. They don't say if it's 8ths or 4ths because it doesn't matter, it's merely a convention that relays tempo. In the modern world we have BPMs and that's all that separates a quarter note from an eight note.
The reason I can say I like more 6/8 songs than 3/4 songs is that 6/8 songs generally have a combo of the right BPM (to be called 6/8 ) and chord change tempo (mainly one chord per bar) yielding a ballad style that I like. Just a personal preference.

Yes, the drums play 4/4 but I somewhat see what you mean about 3/4 in the guitar. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
