For now, I'm mostly using JS as a dumb sample bank, and programming each note in the key editor of Cubase LE.

I'm trying to simulate a half-open hi-hat that chokes off immediately (as if the drummer quickly stepped on the pedal after hitting the hat) by programming a half-open hat note at 100 velocity, followed immediately by a closed hat at reduced velocity (to cut off the first note, and hide in the mix).

I find that any closed hi-hat note that too closely follows a half-open, open, or foot hi-hat sound is always played at 100 velocity (or thereabouts, it's loud), regardless of the programmed velocity of the closed hat, or the velocity of the initial sound. If I move the closed hat note to a point more than one and a half beats or so after the first sound, then the closed hat plays at it's programmed velocity. If the first note is a closed hi-hat, then the following note plays at it's programmed velocity, regardless of how quickly it follows the first note.

Cubase issue, or JS issue, and can it be worked around?

Also, when tinkering with rhythms in the Rhythm Tab and Arrangement Tab, the visual beat indicator seems to early by one beat (the number "2" is displayed/lights up when the sound is playing beat "1"). I didn't think a latency issue would manifest itself in this way, but I dunno...

Thanks.

That is a Jamstix 'feature', which will be removed in the next beta, which should be out in a few days.

The indicators are updated with low refresh frequency to keep GUI CPU usage down. This is purely cosmetic and does not reflect a true offset in the audio thread.

We just released the X9-8 beta which has a fix for your hihat issue. Let me know if it doesn't help.
