|
|
Ok, so I've been experimenting with free jam... what techniques are there to get the best out of JS this way? In what ways does JS respond to the MIDI input?
Reason I ask is that I have an idea of what I want, and I'm having trouble getting JS to do it! Much like a real drummer in fact! I could program the rhythm, but I feel that kind of limits what JS can do.
The basic rhythm I'm thinking of is one with accents on 1, "and of 2" and 4 - think "Clocks" by Coldplay for example.
In order to emphasise this rhythm, I've set up a simple MIDI track playing a VSTi, playing chord stabs just on those accents. In Cubase, I've got the monitor buttons clicked, and I've verified that JS can hear the MIDI input
However, whatever I do with JS's controls, it just keeps on doggedly playing a snare-on-2-and-4 beat
Now I know from the rhythm library that all kinds of different rhythms are available... so how do I get JS to choose one??
Another insight that would be useful is how the JS brain thinks about rhythms in free jam.. does it pick a rhythm from the library and stick with it? Or does it mix and match, say, bass pattern from here, hi-hat pattern from there? Or does it build up a rhythm from scratch, based on the input?
All this waffling derives from the idea that I feel as if I'm shooting for a middle ground between normal and free jam... where I've got a little more control over JS's rhythms, whilst still leaving the door open for "improvisation"
One thing that would be cool is to mix the modes, ie have the bass drum and snare in normal mode, with the hi-hat in free jam, something like that. I suppose, in this example, I could mute everything but the hi-hats in JS and have a separate drum VSTi playing preprogrammed patterns...
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Cheers

You'll have to use manual or key word jam to get a specific rhythm like that.

In key word jam, Jamstix picks rhythms from the library so if you have one or several rhythms stored that fit your needs you can give them a key word and then have JS utilize them.
In free jam, Jamstix creates rhythms on the fly, strictly based on the funkiness/complexity settings and associates them with MIDI input structures. The MIDI also affects play rules (like sidestick switches) and add-ons (like instant hits) but not the actual rhythm base.

We're thinking about something like that for Jamstix 2.

For now I recommend you create your desired rhythm in manual jam mode and then enable a bit of snare and tom accents and just jam manually. This still allows Jamstix to apply limb rules, velocity-based play rules, velocity variances and accentuations to the single rhythm, leading to a much more natural performance then a simple looped rhythm in any other tool or host. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
